Does anyone know if it is even possible to get the backing plate that the stator and pulser coil mount to for a 78 SR?
My gasket went bad and water got into my magneto assembly creating rust and general havok. In fact, I lost spark while riding down the freeway! As I started to clean up the mess I had discovered, I acheived a weak spark, but the bike would not start. Then, when I went to pull the stator I discovered that the plate was broken right across the point where it was held into the engine case by one of its bolts. The plate is worthless, and Japan wants 800 for a new assembly, bike bandit wants almost 700, but all I need is the plate!
thanks for the help

the prices youv been quoted are pretty obscene for just a plate - you'd be better off having one machined for you at that price :s
wouldnt a wrecker be able to help you out though?

Hi. Surely you'd be able to get one in a wreckers over there somewhere...e-bay? Shouldn't cost too much at all I'd think...
Check around.

thanks guys. i've been checking around and will continue to do so, but the prices quoted were for the whole assembly - they won't sell just the plate. Sorry about the confusion.
I'm going to 2 wrecking yards today after work. Wish me luck...

Hello! I'm an SR owner (a '78 and '79), just down the 5 in San Diego. Good luck at the salvage yard! I think my '78 has the same issue with spark (not the backing plate hopefully). I'll be at a salvage yard soon myself it seems. Good luck and keep us posted. Gary Hopwheels

Just a quick update: I bought a bad stator from a guy on ebay in order to get the backing plate - big mistake cause I hadn't botheredd to test MY stator for continuity. Oops... so now I have one plate and two bad stators... Anyway. about every three weeks or so a stator comes up on ebay (got a bid on one now - please don't outbid me, guys!!! ) so i'll be geting one soon, I hope.

Hi, Just to set you at ease...I've owned 4 SR's (still have 3) and 4 XT 500's and I have never had an ignition problem....(...touch wood)...I ahve had a CDI fail on an RZ350...but that unit was able to be fixed...faulty resistor...
All is not really that gloomy...generally...

My 1979 SR500 stator burn't out at around 40,000km. No spark. The dealer wanted about 600 Canadian dollars for a new complete assembly including flywheel. I ended up buying a whole bike (another 79 SR, but a U.S.A. model) for 1200 Canadian dollars. This was about 12 years ago and since then I've had no problems and I've used a lot of the parts from the second bike besides the stator. There's lots of different ignition systems available that eliminate the stock ignition system. I think I read somewhere about a guy who converted his SR to the XT system using a right hand engine cover and all the parts to create a points and condensor ignition

That would be Ron Sutton. I think his web page showing this conversion is still active.

as far as i know there are three different rotor stator cdi combos depending on placing from the sensor on the rotor, being on 6 or 9 or 1 o`clock all of these are not interchangeable. stator can be rewounded for about 150 euro, there are aftermarkets cdi (plug &play)available from various suppliers and there is a German? suplier for a newstator/rotor/cdi combo. ron sutton made a conversion to a msd ignitionsystem www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/7095/7095main.htmregards sjef

UPDATE!!
IT IS ALIVE!
Got a third stator from e-bay, fixed a few crushed wires and PRESTO!
Instant loping idle. Now to fix the timing, adress that pesky carb issue that I was about to fix before this mess, and I'm back on the road
WOOO HOOO!
