I am rebuilding the stock carb on my 1980 SR500. I need the accelerator pump spring, part number 2J4-14589-00-00, but it has been discontinued. Does anyone know if a spring from a later model will work and what that part number might be. Alternatively, anybody know the Mikuni part number so I can check to see if it can be ordered directly from them. If all else fails, anybody know what size spring will work as an adequate replacement. Thanks for your help in advance.

Mikes XS doesn't list any carbs with an accelerator pump so they wouldn't have the correct spring. I have 2 of these carbs and neither one has the accelerator pump plunger or the spring!

With some research, I now have a couple of solutions. First, both accelerator pump springs are available as a Kawasaki part. Each spring is about $1.50. Here are the part numbers. 92081-1137 SPRING SENSOR DIAPHRAGM 92081-1139 SPRING PUMP DIAPHRAGM Should one need the diaphragms, they are also available through Kawasaki. The second solution is K&L makes an accelerator pump rebuild kit that includes the diaphragms, springs and other bits. The rebulid kit costs about $40. Here's a link to the kit from Sudco's catalog. www.sudco.com/vol33/164.pdfThis is all possible because the Mikunis on the 1979-1981 KZ650/KZ1000 ran accelerator pumps on the carbs. Interesting. I've ordered the parts and will report back as to how it works out. Thanks.

You won't believe this, nearly all pumper carbs at some stage have lost the spring etc, when the little split pin gives way, the tension of the spring is not so critical, get a push down 20 cent biro pen, smash it and get the spring out, no shit, it is perfect and the length/spring rate is pretty well spot on. The part that carl refers to is the accelerator pump rod spring. It's about the size of a spring from a Bic click pen. The parts I am after are the pump diaphragm (triangle and square) springs. I have just been notified that the Kawasaki parts listed above are discontinued as well. So I will have to order the K&L rebuild kit and I hope it works. In the meantime, I've gotten a spare carb and borrowed the parts. The old girl is running well with the stock, rebuilt carb. We are off to the sidecar rigger next week and she will soon be married to a 1969 Bingham MKI sidecar.
