;DHi guys I have done the minton mods to my sr500 78 model and have discovered that if I screw the idle mixture screw in all the way (new screw ) and done gently that the motor doesnt change idle codition at all so does this mean the idle mixture is too weak or rich and do I need a new idle jet (standard at the moment ) and if so where do I get such a beast thanks TC

Sounds like the pilot circuit is blocked or float level a bit high or the triangle diaphragm under the carb is on its way out, try compressed air through the mixture screw hole first, Carl.

Where do I find the specs for this 'Minton Mod'? Thanks! Hi Strick. Here's a link to an article on Minton and Vonderhey's take on what they did. www.siue.edu/~rsutton/SR/carbmod.htmG Man

Thanks G-man!
I have spent a LOT of time in both Mikuni, but especially Keihin Carbs. I have even shaved slides (the cut-aways). Because I am at 4500' elevation with both a K&N and Supertrapp on this bike (that is in 100 pieces right now), I will started with a pristine carb and properly adjusted floats. At our elevation we normally have to lean our carbs versus stock set-ups anyway. I will certainly use the link you provided for an information source.
Thanks again!

what muffler/air filter, cam, piston etc, all stock with a noisy muffler go 4th clip down on needle, 310 main jet and start around 2 and a half turns out, after you have fitted new diaphragms and a new float needle and seat assembly, about a $100 all up, or, put some crap two stroke carb on like most people and spend forever trying to get the partial throttle stuff right and lament the lack of grunt off the mark that the pump gave you on the stock carb, go back over all the past forums on carb stuff, all the answers are there.....

K&N filter - no air box, supertrapp exhaust, 10:1/.5mm over, stock cam (I think). If I went to another carb, I would be a Keihin 4stroke pumper carb. Thanks for the info! Because this bike came with the filter & exhaust installed, I am now wondering if the carb has been worked. How do you identify a STOCK 1978 SR500 carb?
You HAVE to consider my eleveation though = 4500'!
Thanks!
