Greetings! I see stock Harley CV style carbs turn up locally for <$30 fairly regularly so I picked one up the other day. Measures 40mm & I was curious if anybody had ever given one a whirl on a Yamaha 500, seems a bit on the big side, but I was thinking the CV feature would help out on the lows/mids. Any thoughts?

You've got to be prepared for a lot of experimentation with this ! As you need to get the air filter & airbox sorted out too not to mention the jetting > A CV carbie has to have whats going on in the engine to match up with the vacuum at the back other wise the slider doesn't go up & down when its supposed to !I'd toss it & get the standard or a Mikuni flat or round 36-38mm but this is only my opinion (I've wasted lots of hours mucking around with CV carbs on lots of different bikes some work some end up in the parts bin) cheers Dave.

Hi ew57,I can only support daves comments 100%! Its not how much fuel you can pour down these old girls its the ability to burn it.Unless your planning major head work you will end up with a garage full of carbs and.........skint! Regards,Andy

Hi 57, i have one on mine, i used an adaptor for a older hd flanged manifold (shovel) to accept a cv. i needed to fab an a/c adaptor and cables. the bike will start w/2kicks and runs fairly good but i'm not 100% happy w/it. when the weather improves i'll be fiddling w/ it again, some of the problem is could be that the adaptor is about .20" larger then the port in the head and i need to blend this in instead of having a sharp edge. but all in all it is probably to big a carb for this engine w/ the minor preformance work mine has. hope this is helpful, Bob

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it! I’m not trying to save a buck here, as obviously the time alone spent getting this to work out would far exceed the price of the “correct” unit, but at the same time, I think getting the stock carb to work correctly with a bored & cammed motor with a good pipe would require a bit of homework as well (Minton Mods?). I by no means consider myself an expert on the subject or even well-educated on CV’s or any other fuel system, just playing with (pre-used/old) ideas, and learning from the trials and tribulations of others.

yamatopdog, looks like Kawasaki KLX/KLR 650's used a Keihin CVK40 carb, if this is true, you may be able to gleen some jetting info from that end.

I was planning to do the same [ and have 2 in bits] I think the hardest part will just be the pilot jet/needle jet [not needle] and the spring tension, [may be able to snip some coils off?] as harleys produce a lot of intake vacuum at low revs and the carb will be rich on the bottom circuits, best of luck, it will be some 8months or so before I do something with mine but I will post the results for free, [and they will be Dyno proven] well done for thinking outside the square as they say. Carl. [PS, I also have 2 early DR600 flatslide pumpers,38mm that I will try as well.]

Instead of a Keihin I used a Mikuni HS40, also available at Harley shops. It bolts right on and works without any problems. The bike starts easier now and emissions are lower. Don't know about the mileage yet.

Any carb needs to be dialled in on a Dyno to that engine /exhaust/filter combo anyway, you would be amazed at how good a properly jetted carb works and you cannot jet unleaded fuel by plug colour , thats why I bought a bloody 60k machine to do it.....regards, Carl
