Howzit Guys,
My SR500 stock standard unit cannot keep a consistent rev anywhere in its range. From idle up. The variation is up to 800rpm up or down. I have stripped the carb, cleaned & checked it, moved the needle, played with the air screw, checked for air leaks etc. The sparkplug is sooty & if I pull out the petcock vacuum (engine not running) there's always fuel coming out.
The timing seems ok, but my strobe might be on the blink doesn't flash consistently & with the extreme variation on the revs its difficult at best. Possibility of a static check?
Other than that she pulls fantastically.
Help!? Jayx

Sounds like you need to repair your fuel tap...if there's fuel coming through the vacuum line it is then 'sucked' into the carby outlet, downstream of the MJ and after the normal mixing process, making the whole thing run very rich. Try sealing off the tap outlet with one blocked tube and doing the same with the vacuum line spigot on the carby...see if it runs better. It won't run right with the vacuum line open...so make sure you seal it off... SR

Well, well well don't know what to say, I guess thank you is in order. I cut the vacuum, stoppered it with a bolt & turned the tap to "Pri" and wavroom she just sat there at 1500rpm hardly budging. When warmed she gently hopped between 1250-1500 RPM.
Now during all my relentless fiddling I dropped my needle one notch down (shifted the E ring one up from the central position). I did notice it was definitely there before. I'll consider that more after a road test.
Finally the "air screw" adjustment? Any suggestions?
Thanks again

Heh, heh...no worries Test ride the bike to see if that needle setting still suits first. For your mixture setting: as a rough base setting screw the air screw to around 1.5 turns out (*to set the fully in point only gently seat the screw, don't screw it in hard!), then after the bike is warmed up slowly turn it in or out until you reach the point of highest idle RPM. Gets a bit warm in there so watch you don't burn you hands... Then adjust the bike's idle to suit you requirements. Should be it. SR
