Hi people, I am new to the SR500 world and just need a little of your good advice. I have been told (and read in the forum) that the flatslides are a much better way to go than the standard carbs.
I have an 1982 (apparently, although compliance plate says 78. It has discs front and back and I am fairly sure it is all stock), stock pipe (although I could be convinced to change that) and was wondering if a Mikuni RS 36mm Flatslide will do the trick for me?
Will it bolt in OK?
cheers Stew

hi stew,a warm welcome to the fold.read all the posts on carburation and fuel issues before you decide because there is a big choice on alternative carbs.my opinion is this, which is based on other more experienced sr experts, is that i would stick to a mikuni vm36 roundslide as they are a much more simple item to play about with than the stock carb.from what i can gather the flatslide carb can be temperamental when it comes to tuning and is more used by people aiming at a high level of engine tuning.it really depends how far down the tuning route you want to to go.i reckon a vm36 coupled to a large k&n filter with a more freeflowing silencer would give a good increase in performance[the bigger the filter the better, dont fit one of those small conical types, they just dont do the business, bigger volume=better results].i know what you mean about stock exhaust they are to restricted.again there are plenty of choices out there,i'm running a b.s.a goldstar replica exhaust and its very open! makes a great sound and is the best i've tried for performance too.do your homework when it comes to engine mods, its very easy to run off down the shops spend a load of money and be dissapointed.keep it simple would be my advice.there is a wealth of info on this forum, good luck. andy

Dellorto's are cheap and have a pump, two stroke carbs do not and you will lose grunt and find they are tricky just off idle to about the middle of the needle, they can be jetted right but its a hassle, ask curly on this forum, he has his right, but has bought a 40mm Dellorto........ Carl
