Only problems I ever have with starting is when my plug is fouled. Definitely not the only possibility but its an easy check.

600 miles into owning my SR the spark quit. I bought a new plug, a new battery, had the coil checked (good) and still no spark. That left only two things, the CDI unit and the stator. The only way to test the CDI is with a known good one. The stator can be static tested with an ohm meter. The required values are listed here in other posts.
Since the CDI unit is a much easier fix I bought one on ebay for $28, but that didn't restore the spark. That left the stator which is $895 for a new part. Finding a good used one may take some effort, I found a parts bike 600 miles away for $250 and the stator from the (blown) engine on it looked nasty, but cleaned up (sandblasted) and installed produced a spark and I have driven it 4000 miles without further problems.

I've heard you can get a stator rewound at either www.rmstator.com or Rick's Motorsports, 800-521-0277. No experience with either, just heard it and wrote it down. miker
