Hi Should the hot start button stay up when its pressed ? I have 2 carbs to choose from ,one with a accelerator pump the other hasn't ,they both do the same thing. When I press the button up I feel a slight movement & a click but when releasing it the button just drops back to its original position & doesn't appear to open the throttle at all . Can this device be overhauled & repaired or will I have to buy a new one ? £25 for small screw with a button on the end seems a hell of a lot of cash to me Cheers LURCH

The hot start buttons on both my SR500's do not stay up. Best to learn to start it without the button as I have done, its easy when you get the knack of it.

The hot start buttons on both my XT and SR stay up. They should make about 1 mm difference to the throttle stop position. According to the owners manual for the XT - yep it came with the books, including service records and all - the hot start button is closed by twisting the throttle closed allowing the second throttle cable to click it off. Works well. If we are talking VMSS minkuni's the one with the pump would be good to have but more complicated to fix. The hot start button has a little spring clip engaging a slot in the shaft in the up position. Maybe you just need to rotate the shaft so it engages in a new, not worn, position? Or you might be able to find a new spring clip? My SR doesn't have the second return throttle cable. Hot starting then involves a frantic grope for the hot start button to flic it off quick. Mick

Are you guys talking about aftermarket carbs, or did the old SR500s come with a hot start?

Bize We are talking about the original carbs. Very useful feature for retstarting when you stall it at the lights. It cracks the throttle just a smidgeon, no more than 1.5 mm, I reckon. It does boost the idle up to nearly three grand, when you use it. Mick

I'll have to go have a look at my carb and see if it has it, as I've not noticed it before (I have the 400cc). There have been times when I would've liked a hotstart in the past.

Thanks Lurch. I checked but I can't see one anywhere, not even on the idle adjuster like you said. Maybe the later model 400s don't have it, it is definately a different carb to the older SRs, there's even electricals going to it (don't know what it is as my workshop manual is in Japanese, but I'm assuming that it has something to do with the AIS. Here's a diagram of what my carb looks like:

Hi Bize Thats a CV type carb ,completely different to the Mikuni VM's I suppose Yamaha has gone to this type to help with the ever more stringent emission laws & perhaps the hot start system isn't needed as CV carbs give a cleaner burn I would say item 21 is the idle/tick over adjustment screw BTW how old is your bike ? post a Pic Cheers LURCH

Lurch: Yeah, 21 is the idle adjuster. My bike is a 2003 model. There's pics of my bike elsewhere in the forum, but here's one of the latest (since this pic was taken, the tail light has been replaced with a smaller unit).

WOW Mate thats a nice bike ;D I bet that Zorst sounds good . Its a bit different to the "Arse in the air "R1 . My best Buddie used to have one , about 12 months ago he literally rode off the side of a mountain on it ,the bike was found 500ft down a valley ,he survived though but he's still got ft long rods sticking out of his legs Ouch !! One of my other bikes a FJR1300 I thought that was fast till I rode his R1 those things are MENTAL ,wheelies every where ,scared the shit out of me Ride safe LURCH

They're not so different. . . They're both blue and they're both Yamahas. . . That's all that matters ;D Seriously though, yeah it's a bit of a change, but I don't really get a kick out of the R1 anymore and I just love riding the SR. The pipe does have a nice note to it, but it's not excessively loud to be honest. It is a mean looking pipe though and watch out if you touch it while it's still hot

It'll be interesting if the SR goes to FI for next year as has been suggested...guess we'll find out soon! SR
