I've got a flat slide Mikuni and a improvised-but-reasonably-unrestrictive exhaust on my SR, and I'm running the stock airbox with the airbox-style K&N filter.
I read contradictory things about whether or not there is anything to be gained by modifying the airbox itself. Some say the stock box is fine. Other articles refer to drilling holes to "open up" the airbox - but they never say how many, how big, or where to drill these holes. Any opinions?
I like the stock appearance, so I'd rather not go the clamp-on K&N route.

If you do decide to drill holes in your airbox, you might find these little plugs handy (they'll stop crap getting into your airbox): They are about 20mm in diameter and you should be able to get them from anywhere that sells stuff for dirtbikes. Oh yeah, as to whether it's worth modifying your airbox: I would have a clue

I have a K+N filter in the stock air-box and I just leave the air-box cover off. I made a little clip to help keep the filter in place. Seems to work O.K.

for the amount of air gained by drilling holes, my opinon would be not to bother, just go teh lid-less route as suggested.
I don't think you'd notice much difference. Thats my opinion anyway

Thanks for the info guys. You know, I never thought of just leaving the lid off the airbox - but it makes sense.

Hi, Certainly give it a go...only thing that you'll notice is a fairly large increase in induction noise, especially with the side covers on. Not a big problem with a loudish pipe...so all may be fine. I also lockwired the air filter in-situ by drilling a small hole in the air box surround and wiring the 'handle to it...I also bent the filter retaining spring clip a bit more to make it more effectively located.
