I'm keeping in touch with the new owner the '78 I had, and he's experiencing a problem with the bike. The bike's cutting out, stalling when he gets on the throttle. Could having the bike sit for a few months, only starting and warming her up every week or so, lead to a carb needing cleaning, or fuel tap plugged up? I'm pretty certain based on what he described over the phone that it's experiencng a fuel delivery issue. In my estimation it has to be a by product of sitting unused, as when I was riding her regular, it didn't have this problem. I want to help him out, so any help from the gang here would be appreciated! Thanks!

A piece of crud can block up a jet anytime. Maybe more likely once the bike is being used more again? In the float needle passage this could let enough fuel for idle by but not for higher speeds. Diaphrams can fail. Hard to rule out electric tho... breaking down coil? I had a similar thing happen on a Miata after the engine was washed - water had collected in the plug wells on the DOHC head and was sealed in by the seals that were supposed to keep it out. I'd have him put a new plug in, put some Xecol injector cleaner in his gas, maybe pull the float bowl and check for flow at the float needle. Also the petcock since its easy. Check the petcock vacuum line to be sure there's no leaks. miker

Yep id do everything miker says and if it still causes problems then have a gander at the accelerator pump diaphragm.

my moneys on fuel.the float bowl can dry up or get low so the needle is not located against its seat.i had my carb peeing out petrol from the overflow once after not turning the bike over for a few weeks.a quick tap on the side of the float bowl got her seated again.fuel going stale?may be but doubtful.worth cleaning the tap and filters and re-plenish with fresh fuel.i'm not a big fan of the stock carb on the sr. regards. andy

Thanks andy. Mark (the new owner) had Friday off work and was going to get into it. Haven't heard from him, so I'm guessing it's figured out.
