I just bought a 79 SR500 and it comes with a 37mm Flat slide mikuni carb, but no air filter. I want to buy a K&N air filter for it, but dont know what size/model to buy that will fit on the aftermarket carb. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

hi cordo, definitely get it filtered, needless to say you will be sucking all sorts of rubbish in if not.measure the outside diameter of the carb and then find a good k&n stockist on the web, they usually list the diameter where it attaches to the carb, the main diameter of the filter and the length.my experience gained by talking to others more informed than me is that you want the BIGGEST filter you can fit in the space available,i think mine is approx 100 dia X 150 long.its the internal volume that makes the difference.dont use one of those crappy small coneshaped filters, you wont get the best from the carb.hope this helps.

Thanks Andy. i haven't picked the bike up yet, but as soon as I do, i'll get the calipers out.
I thought that carb might have a K&N that was made specifically for it. I suppose it all depends on the size of the area you're putting it in.
If anyone else has this carb and can give me a part number or recommendation, please let me know.

It shouldn't be any trouble to get a filter, as already mentioned. A K&N is the way to go, unless you enjoy replacing the piston and reboring the engine every 10,000 miles.

looks like thumperstuff.com has one that they advertise as "FILTER, AIR, K&N HI-FLOW for 36-38mm MIKUNI, Part# 1213 - $42"
that's their part number though... no way to tell what K&N part number that is, i dont think...

thanks aero. I'm not too interested in doing that every 10K miels...
Just talked to Mark on the phone from thumperstuff.com and he said Mikuni makes a 36 and a 38mm carb for these bikes, but not a 37mm. So i guess i'll have to be patient and wait for delivery of the bike so that i can measure the inlet before I can get that on order.

There'd be an K&N filter suit for sure. Possibly use one that is offset a little to leave some room in there for the breather hose etc. SR

Mark at Thumperstuff hooked me up with a K&N that is used for the 36 & 38mm carburetors. I have a 62mm outside diameter inlet on my carb and that matched up, so I placed the order. I'll supply pics when it arrives. on another note, is there any way to identify the carburetor? I can't find any real great markings on it that would lead be to think it would be a model number or anything. These are the only numbers on it.

Hmmm...looked through my Mikuni catalogue...perhaps a TM38mm carby...not sure about the C etc. Perhaps the T5 might mean the throttle valve cutaway...not sure. Possible a code for a manufacturer application...? I'll do some research. SR

Thanks a ton StewRoss. I would be quite interested in what I've got here. The guy I bought it from said it was a 37mm, but it is very possible he could have been mistaken. And for the record, the one that Mark sent from Thumperstuff was a K&N RU-1770. I'll post pics later, but it probably doesn't look much different than anything you've got goin on
