can any of you lads offer any advice on float levels?what are the symptoms of 'to low' is it poor starting hot or cold.my bike starts to fire then gives up,it eventually gets there but can take umpteen kicks.before i strip the carb [which is a 34mm vm replacement, non pumper] your thoughts may help.i must add that this has not always been the case, started fine until recently, gradually deteriorated, also runs fine when on the move, just the initial start up.similar when hot but 3-4 kicks.gut feeling is fuel related problem.certain that its not over filling the float chamber, cant smell fuel and no dripping from overflow.thanks. andy

Hi, The standard float level for the 34mm Mic is between 22 to 24 mm, measured from the bottom of the float to the body where the float bowl seals against. This measurement is taken with no gasket on the surface and with no depression of the spring loaded pin on the needle and seat. You can always make allowance for the gasket in the measurement. If you wish I can forward you a diagram of the way to measure it. My e-mail is: sross2@vtown.com.au. If the float was too high you'd possibly get black smoke from the exhaust and hard starting...plus possibly flooding from the carby overflow. Too low might get you cutting out at speed or a lack of power during running due to the bowl continually running at a low level... One carby I saw years ago had been assembled incorrectly and had the needle on the top of the retaining plate instead of underneath...this caused the guy hard starting and erratic uncontrollable RPM as the needle became stuck on the top of the jet as the slide lowered...small things can have a large effect.
