Hi All,
On the SR that I am building up as a racer, I want to replace the Std SR vacuum operated fuel tap with a non-vacuum type tap. Does anyone know of any Yamaha fuel taps that are not vacuum operated that will bolt straigth onto the SR tank. I have looked at the fuel tap on my XT500, however the distance between the mounting bolts is less than that on the SR tap, so it won't fit.

Hi, I seem to recall on here somewhere that a non-vacuum XS650 tap might go on...can't recall where that was written...possibly on this forum... Are you after better flow or simply a non-vac tap? You could always simply turn it to 'prime' if that was all you were after. SR

Col I jut modified my tap on my 250 the other day as it was leaking through the diaphram . I took out the spacer between the 2 diaphrams & put it back together . The yammy dealer gave me 2 bungs 1 for the carby & 1 for the tap . Now it works ,prime is on & anywhere else is off (no reserve) Not a biggy for me as I only use the bike as a round towny ( it'll do till a tap falls from the sky anyway) Cheers Dave .

The '78 SR vacuum tap uses the same oval O-ring with two cross pieces as the '78 XS650 vacuum tap (same part number) so they should have the same base at a minimum.
I emailed MikesXS.com and specifically asked if their manual XS replacement tap would work for the '78 XS with the funny O-ring, and they said definitely it would.
I haven't got one yet as my tap is working fine, but there you have it... probably worth taking a $40 chance.

Stew,
I am mainly want to be rid of the vacuum operation side of the tap, I so far have not found the flow through the std tap to be a problem, as the tap is a 6mm bore and that is the same size as the inlet port into my carbie, so a bigger bore tap is not going to achieve a lot.
I have been thinking of making an adaptor plate to fit a '76 TT tap, which is a straight on/off type.

Hi, Yes I guess you could always do that...I might have a look at how it would go...I use YZ taps on the CR's, these are just ON/OFF...but on the newer one I'm building I have one from a YF450F...(WR model, whatever that designation is....), this has a reserve as well. But they are on alloy tanks so they don't count as an answer for your problem. Give it a go...you can always fall back on the 650 Yam tap as 'miker' says...guaranteed to fit. There are others here who have done this change as well I'm sure. SR

I dont know if it is of interest but we have some non vac taps that are made to fit straight onto the SR tank, they are coming from Japan next week along with some very nice carby spigots to suit CR and FCR carbs, they are offset for better clearance etc etc. PM me and i can give you some info or at least show you a pic so you can see how they are set up.... might help to get an idea of how to go about it???

Hi , just a thought but if you bung up the prime hole that is in the tap plate then prime is off ,then just take out the spring that pushes on the diaphram, you could also take off the 0 ring that is on the opposite side to the spring and if you are worried that the plunger might restrict the flow you might be able to put the spring or a suitable one on the oppisite side to keep it open. Ive never tried this but I had my tap off the other day to fix the vac side of it , mine was stuck on !

I put 1 of Mike XS non vacuum taps that he has made to replace the vacuum tap for XS650s . I bought it for a 650 but didn't use it and it bolted right on to the sr500 tank. I hated that vacuum thing. The outlets might have to massaged to flow enough for a race application but it works great on the stocker.Since it comes with a double outlet you 2into1 it for more flow. Has a reserve also. www.mikesxs.net/mikesxs-fuel_system.php?category_id=4.1

Just placed an order for one of the non-vacuum replacement taps for the vacuum style setup. This will go on my aluminium Manx tank I got from G.Britain made for the SR. Also found some great tools for dealing with the chain installation on that site.

THanks for all the replys guys, I have desided to make up an adaptor plate to fit the fuel tap from one of my early TT500 tanks.
The tap from MikesXS sound good, but even though the exchance rate of the $AUS v's $US is getting better, with the cost of postage etc, it is cheaper and easier to adapt the TT tap.
