My 1981 SR500H has started to surge under steady throttle. It accelerates and idles fine though. I've heard this can be caused by running lean, but my plug looks ok. Any ideas?
Thanks, Josh

Hi Josh, My experience of the 32mm carbs for the G and H models is that they can cause problems...have a go and see how it is. Check your jetting against the standard specs and see if someone has been playing around. Has this been running well for some time then suddenly started running badly? Is the air filter clean etc. Have you just washed it, no water got into the fuel?...etc. SR

Good call Stew I'd start by dumping the fuel bowl as that is always an easy first up fixer ! I use a short phillips tec bit in my small socket & ratchet so you can leave the carb in situ . Try it cheers Dave . PS I know you can dump the bowl using the plug , but I like to wash the crap out of the bottom of the bowl too ?

Thanks for the help guys. The bike has been surging consistently for the last 50 or so miles, the 1200 before that were trouble free. I took off the carb only to be greeted by stripped screw heads that hold the float bowl cover on. Any tips for getting out stripped screws? The air filter is also clean and the bike hasn't gotten wet. I sprayed the manifold area w/ carb cleaner to see if there was an air leak, but couldn't find one. I also tried using a bit of choke while riding, but that had no effect on the surging. Could this be a clogged pilot jet? I may try putting a bit of Berryman's B-12 Chemtool Choke and Carburetor Cleaner in the gas as I saw that recommended for cleaning out carbs on another forum.

i had the same problem when taking apart my carb, i got a hacksaw blade and very carefull sawed a straight line across each screw so i could take them out with a flat screwdriver, then bought a bolt replacement kit on ebay. Just make sure you hve a strong magnet handy to get all the little bits of swarf so they dont go into the carb, or just make sure you clean the carb thoroughly afterwards.

If I was you, the first thing I would do is put 98 Octane fuel in the bike. After weeks of cleaning adjusting and generally messing around with my carb, to the point where I could just about do it in the dark without a torch, I still got clean idle, great acceleration, but missing and farting at constant throttle openings on the highway. I swapped from 95 octane to 98 and my dramas went away. Mick Mick
