Hi all Im planning to do some long trips on my SR so I would like to get the best economy out of my machine .It is stock as far as I know and I am going to put a K&N filter in the standard air box.Im currently useing 4.75 L/100km (about 58 mpg) Any thoughts on any thing else I can do that will help without doing major work . Thanks

Just a wild-a** guess... if you disconnected the accelerator pump, it probably wouldn't have as much oomph but might save a little gas.
Mine is stock except for a glasspak, I get about 58-60mpg on average.

The first thing and probably the best thing you should do is swap the front sprocket for a 17tooth sprocket (1more than standard) you will be able to ride at the same speeds at a lower rev also with a higher top end speed.
Im not sure about disconnecting the accelerator pump, you might end up with the engine running lean when under load and thats not good!! id never disconnect the accelerator pump just for fuel economy as its not worth the tiny amount of fuel you would save.

Thanks for the advice so far, Ill check my front sprocket, just as a matter of interest the best figures I had as standard was 58 mpg, I changed to a K&N filter in the standard box and now its up to 65 mpg ! all figures clocked over several rides. Not a bad result for for just putting in a new air filter and better performance to boot

65 really!
do you have any wieght reductions? what year, what kind of wheels/brakes/tires?
i'm wondering if you could get to 70, that'd be like ninja 250 territory

jesus... My carb must be more boggy than I thought... I'm getting around 40 mpg I hate it, I really have to work on getting everything into most efficient mode. Could a winning pipe and a straight K&N be reducing my milage?

Anything that puts you too lean or too rich can reduce your mileage.
I have an XS650, one of the very lean-jetted US 81's. I got low 50's for mileage with the stock jetting. Increased the main jets one step bigger, and I started getting high 50's and even over 60 on occasion. Apparently getting the mix right meant the engine could do the same job with a smaller throttle opening, yielding higher mileage.

hey guys My SR is an 1980 model and almost standard no weight reductions in fact ive bolted on a rather large rack and bag on the back everything is pretty standard i keep the tires with a little more pressure about 2 psi over recomended and im a bit of a slow rider ( its my first bike ) i sit around 90 - 100 km/h on the highway im trying to get a 17 tooth front sprocket but everyone is out of stock at the moment. Im thinkung of changeing to a 520 chain/sprocket if they carnt get me a 530 one
