My recently acquired '85 SR (11,500k's) is experiencing some frustating carburation woes including:
Intermittent Very difficult starting (hot and cold)
Won't hold an idle setting (need to blip throttle at lights)
Seems to 'flood' after 4 -5 kicks from cold (even using 'choke' and no throttle).
If it stalls, the bike cannot be kick started until it has cooled right down.
I am no mechanic: a tune and service by trusted (non SR specialist) bike shop removed other sources of likely angst and after leaning out the mixture some improvement was experienced in the short term.
This is proving very frustrating and confidence is low.....I need to find places to park that are on hills for bump starts....
As the bike was not used much and only recently put back on the road, logic tells me that a carb rebuild is in order. This raises a couple of very important questions:
Is it worthwhile rebuilding the standard carb, or am I better off swapping in a new one?
If a new one is the go, what is my next move?
I need to keep the bike on the road, and am no mechanic: fitting cables and adjusting idle speeds is about it for my carb tuning capabilities.
Nirvana for me would be to bolt in a new carb (pre jetted for standard air intake and exhaust system) and shelve the stock carb for rebuild when sufficient time, energy and patience are available.
Reliability is a key issue for me, but it seems likely that the right solution may result in a few more horses as well?
All comments cheerfully and thankfully ackowledged.
