Yesterday I installed the stock carburetor that I bought on ebay a couple months ago. I was able to get the the bike started a few times, but only with the "fake choke" on and only if I juiced it up to about 3000 rpm as soon as it caught. I could keep it running at 3000+ rpm but otherwise it would quit. I'm suspecting that the idle circuit is clogged up, but I wanted to get some advice before tearing it down. Also, should I disable the accellerator pump while troubleshooting? One thing at a time and all...
Good news is that I was able to fix the overflow problem with the flatslider while it was off. I still want to get the stock carb fixed, though.

I feel for you. The stock 34mm carb is fine when it works. When it dosen't, and begins to wear out it can be a real nightmare. Prompting most to just replace it with a 36mm from white Bros, or one of a XT or TT. The factory service manual has good descriptions of how the various circuits work. You may also want to check out Ron Suttons website on these carbs.

Thanks. I'll check out Ron Sutton's site. I was tempted to just get a VM-34 or 36 from Sudco since they're reasonably priced, but I thought I'd give the stocker a chance. How much of a difference does the accelerator pump on the stock carb make compared to an afermarket Mikuni VM without one?
