So, I think I'm running rich. with a quick blip of the throttle there is a very small puff of black smoke out the back. I've adjusted the air mix screw a few times and I thinking it still needs to let it out more. set up: UNI filter on carburetor supper trapp exhaust 12 disc's
The plug is black, there is a a little bit of carbon deposit on the chain adjuster. and the exhaust disc's as well. the plug should be a tan color, that i do know. but how much carbon deposits should there be?? any thoughts?

The previous owner did the Minton Mods to my carb. I had the same symptoms you have. I have 12 discs in the supertrapp and a K&N in an opened up stock air box. I dropped the pilot jet down to a #20 from a #25 and it is like a new bike. The bike runs strong from top to bottom ,no smoke off idle any more and hot starts are so much easier now. I just kick it with no throttle and catch it when it fires. 1 or 2 kicks and no fear when you stop for gas and it idles reliably too. Every bike is different though so make carb changes at your own risk .

well i guess i could have explained more. it starts and idles fine. pulls like a tractor through all the RPM's. so, should i just turn out the mixture screw a little more? i'm trying to find out what the sweet spot (without smoke) is. not to rich not to lean.

If you are getting a blip only when the throttle is blipped, this would be the extra squirt of fuel you get from the accelerator pump - assuming you have standard VM34SS carb. Try dropping needle one notch if you think the thing is a little too black on the plug. Too rich is better than too lean. Needle will cover it if you think its too rich at lower revs say up to 3500-4000rpm. If you think its rich up top, try one size smaller main jet. Though I did come across something on the supertrapp with regard to adjusting the number of discs until the mixture looks right on your spark plug. Might have been a supertrapp website. Mick

Hi All Couldn'd reply to my own topic so I wll put it here instead
I suspected the float needle, so set the float ht @ 25 mm instead of 22 mm and put a transparent tube up from the bowl drain, it showed level still to high, so then I set them at about 30 mm and this showed the fuel level at about 5mm below the top of bowl, the bike goes better that it ever did before, I am definatley going to use this method in the future Barry
