Hey guys-- I recently picked up a used stock carb for my '78. The aftermarket Mikuni flat-slider that came on the bike has some issues that I need to take care of so I figured it would be cool to have a backup while I muck around. I found a good ebay deal on a stock carb off a 1980 (VM32SS). I figured it would be nice to have the stock carb, anyway, in case I wanted to enter vintage shows or racing.
The carb supposedly came off a running bike. It looks pretty clean inside and out. The question is, should I do anything other than just install it on the bike? I don't have a replacement float bowl gasket for it so I don't really want to break it open. Would I get anything out of soaking it in carb cleaner overnight?

Hi, Mate if the carby is working OK don't touch it in my opinion. Clean it up externally and see how it goes. My experience over the years has shown that the 32mm carby can give a bit of trouble. More so it seems than the the 34mm one. Having said that my mates 'G' model is cruising along nicely, so I might just be unlucky with these. Remember you'll have to run the vacuum line from the rear of the tap to the carb as well or the bike won't run properly...not sure what you've been doing 'till now about the tap. SR

Thanks Stew. I'll guess I'll heed your advice and just install it and see how she does before messing around with anything. As for the fuel tap, I changed out the stock vacuum operated unit for an adapter plate and universal manual tap a few weeks ago. I'll cap the vacuum port on the VM32SS.
