The petcock is vacuum operated whilst in the "on" position. prime is just there to fill the carby after you have had the thing apart or drained the fuel from it. So by the soud of things you have a perfectly functional fuel tap unless you are not getting flow when the engine is running.

Hi, Yes, the standard tap is vacuum operated by the extra line that should be positioned at the inside of the tap. ON and RES are vacuum operated positions only. It will only flow freely to the carby on prime as this is the setting to fill the carby bowl without the engine running. Just in case you run it dry or after carby maintenance... What carby are you running? If you've an aftermarket carby the vac tube probably won't be connected. There is a 650 Yam rubber manifold that will fit most of the aftermarket carbs and it has a spigot already positioned in it for vacuum. That would work the vac tap. The standard carby has a spigot already in the carb body to operate the tap. SR

the only way the carb gets fuel is while the petcock is in the "PRI" position. i've turned the petcock back to "ON" after i get it running, and it slowly uses all the fuel in the bowl and shuts off.

Do you have a vacuum line running to the back of the petcock and is it hooked to a vacuum source on the carb or intake manifold? I changed mine out for a manual petcock from MIKES XS even though it worked perfectly. I kicked my brains out because I knocked the vacuum line off when I was fooling with the throttle cables.

ok i figured it out. the tank wasn't filled up and the petcock should have been on "RES". silly me. however... the carb is leaking from the float bowl. not from the triangle gasket because i changed that a few months ago. i believe its coming from the brass screw. anyone have this problem?

Hi, Which screw do you mean? Are you talking about the mixture screw at the front/underneath of the carby?? Or...one of the bowl attachment screws??... One other thing that is worth re-stating is that if you run it out of fuel and are in the ON or RES position, you need to go to prime to fill the bowl again or the bike will take about 1 year to start by kicking...well roughly anyway. the plug/drain screw. you'd use a flat head screwdriver on it. you can see it from the right side of the bike.

Hi, Ah, OK...I think that there should be a metal gasket under that...I'd have to check up...but if that was missing it would probably leak. Also some people can tend to overtighten these things and they may crack the bowl in this area. If there was a gasket it would only be fairly thin...is there one there? I should get a parts book for the SR...you'd think after owning them for 26 years I'd have one by now...one day.... SR
