Hi all,
I think there's a lesson to be re-learnt from my workshop activities on the weekend.
I was working on the final drive of my '65 Honda S600 roadster(yes it's a car). I had been hearing some strange noises from the rear end and when I drained the oil, from the R/H rear chain case (yes, it's a chain driven car), it came out a nice "rust red". So, I dissassembled both the rear chain case assemblies, along with 40 years worth of crud, there was a fine film of rust on many of the steel components including the bearings.
Anyway I could not undo the nuts holding the Rear sprocket on to either of the rear axles, (the manual say to torque them to 140 - 180 ft/lb) and belive me they were tight. After much effort I resorted to the fitter's friends, a 2 lb hammer and a cold chisel and split the nuts. Now these nuts are not hardware store variety nuts, think 20mm, fine thread, castle, half nut!
I have just gotten an email back from my freindly Honda car dealer in Adelaide saying the nuts are NLA, there were discontinued years ago. So its off to the local machinist to see how much it will cost for him to make two new nuts.
LESSON; check if you can get a replacement part before destroying the original!
Further to the above, since both drive chains were showing signs that they were worn I thought I would get a 110 link 530 chain and some rivet links from the local bike shop and cut it to make two 51 link drive chains.
Now, I am not sure if this is a sign of how the motorcycle accessory / aftermarket part business is going, but when I asked at the local bike shop for a 530 chain, I was told bluntly that there is no such thing, only 520 chain. When I said that my SR500 yamaha ran a 530 chain, the guy looked it up in his Sprocket and chain book, and yes, it listed the SR as taking 520 chain and sprockets (XT500 parts). I then asked if he could look up sprockets and chain for a late 60's triumph twin, trying to prove that there was such a thing as 530 chain, the book didn't list them, and the guy gave me a smug "I told you so" look.
So I left, leaving this guy sure that he was right and there is no such thing as a 530 chain because there was nothing in "his" book that is fitted with 530 chain and sprockets.
Now is just me, or does stuff like this happen everywhere!
