Hi All been having carbi trouble, It's not been idling too well, I put it down to the enrichment valve not seating too well, seems to be OK now . when I had the carbi on the bench I had a look at the hot start screw , it seems to pop in and out when I push it but what makes it work when it's in operation?,also it's using about a litre of engine oil per 1000Ks is it time for new rings? Thanks in advance for any replys Barry

Hi Barry, The hot start button is meant to set the throttle for start when the bike is hot...the idea is that you press the button down and it opens the throttle slightly and then leaving all else alone you kick the bike and it should start. You turn it off once the engine's going by forcing the throttle back toward normal idle...that resets the button. Some use it an others don't...I personally don't but if you're finding it difficult to start when hot give it a go. I have found the standard SR 32mm carby to be problematic on the later models that came here, G ('80) and H ('81) models...I have persevered with these as far as I can but I usually fit an earlier E/F model 34mm carby if I can get one; or better still get rid of it and fit a Mic VMS round slide. Relatively cheap and once sorted problem free. There are some other considerations when fitting the VMS as well such as cables etc. but it's all been done a thousand times before... SR's can tend to use oil as they wear. That can be partly due to ring wear etc., but is more often than not worn valve stem seals. If it's using a litre every 1,000k's I wouldn't worry. Keep you eye on it and when you eventually get sick of it pull the engine and do something about it. In my opinion only use genuine valve stem seals when you do a rebuild as well. One of my old SR's is geting around Perth somewhere...it used to be an immaculate H model but I had fitted an E model tank and seat to it....should have kept that one but.... SR
