Hi guys,my 83 SR Japanese Import 32mm Mikuni carb,K@N filter was running rich,ie visible black smoke at idle and also under closed to one half throttle opening.Very black plug with quite heavy carbon deposits.Ive got a "breathe easy" pipe on her[PO told me it was from an Enfeild, great noise!!!] So I check out jets #20 in the pilot and 310 main jet.Needle position was in the middle of the five positions.I lowered the needle two positions,ie moved clip to the top of the needle. On start up no black smoke at idle, and nice brown plug after a good thrashing down the road....yahoo!!!but.... Under small constant throttle openings ie maintaining 50-80kmh shes a tad rough. It was sort of there before I dropped the needle but seems worse now. Can some one point me where to go from here [possibly!]What is the screw directly under under the exit side of the carb?It was set on about 1 and 1/2 turns out from closed.Am I correct in presuming this is the air/fuel mixture screw for the pilot jet??Should I fiddle with this??Maybe go back one position with needle?Any veiws /comments from you fullas appreciated greatly, there is a lot of great knowledge here, cheers!!

When these things happen everyone jumps on the pilot jet, but the problem may very well not be in the carb. That thing needs vacuum to run properly. Check that out. At low RPMs you could have a valve issue. Check your timing! Check your lifter adjustment! Think I'm kidding? Anyone hear of this before? Old timers out here? Oh shank, dropped my dentures in the gas tank again!

As to your second question: That's your pilot jet! 1 1/2 turns out from seated (don't bottom it hard, check earlier thread!!!). Then find happy medium tick over.
