Well, I just finished putting my modded VM34SS back on the bike. Took 0.04 inch off the slide (vs. 0.05), moved the needle clip to the lowest position, put in a #320 main jet. It looks like I've converted a bike that ran horribly lean . . . to one that doesn't run at all. It'll start, run for maybe five seconds, then sputter and die. Does this 2-3 times, then it's flooded and won't start at all till I give it time to clear. Pulled the plug, it's black and oily & I can smell raw gas at the plug hole. (Note - I'm starting with no choke and no throttle.) Any ideas where I could have screwed up with the mods? An aftermarket carb from ThumperStuff is looking better and better . . .

I too had a bike that started easily and ran ok....but I had to tinker. I wanted to let it breathe a little easier as it's saddled with a Motad exhaust for the time being which is even more restrictive than the stock system. So I removed the airbox and fitted a K&N slip-on filter. Still the bike started and ran well, but lacked a bit in the mid range, I had on order a larger main jet (Iwas advised to fit a 350 as I plan to use a less restrictive exhaust in the near future) but in the mean time I thought I would raise the needle a notch to see if that would improve things......guess what? I now have a non-starting bike!! My next move is to put the needle back where it was and I think if you do the same you could be blatting around your neighbourhood very soon.

Having given this a little more thought I realised that the needle position has no affect on starting ability (let me know if I'm wrong) What slipped my mind was that I'd oiled the K&N filter while the carb was off the bike. I think I overdid it, and I think that my starting trouble could be down to this. I'm off to buy a can of filter cleaner Ken
