How much of the standard, original tank is reserve? Yesterday I ran out of gas (main), and couldn't start for about an hour. Foolishly, when the bike hiccuped I didn't believe I was already running down the main, and so didn't switch to reserve until the engine died while I coasted off the interstate. My guess is I sucked an air bubble into the gas line. Once it restarted (an hour later), it ran fine on reserve till I reached a gas station. This AM it was again ready to go...
Am I correct in thinking that the reserve takes up about 1 gallon (1/3) of the total tank capacity?

Hi, My recollection of reserve was it is about 3 litres or so... ...one comment I have for you is related to your fuel tap...please ignore the below if you already know this of course The SR (...and lots of other bikes) have a vacuum operated fuel tap. The tap is always left in the ON position and when the engine is running the vacuum from the inlet manifold opens the tap to allow the fuel through. If you run the carby right down until it's out of fuel, when in the ON setting, then you will have a fair amount of difficulty in sucking enough fuel through even after turning it to RES, while just kicking it over. You will eventually suck enough fuel through, I stress eventually, by kicking...but you'll probably be totally knackered and unable to ride the bike...heh, heh... ;D The tap has another position called PRI, which stands for 'prime'. This setting allows a unrestricted low of fuel into the carb bowl regardless of the engine operating or not. That allows the carby bowl to fill and the bike to start...you then turn the tap back to RES just so it shuts off the fuel again if you stop the engine. Hopefully this has been of some use to you... SR

Thanks, Stew! 3 liter reserve is much of the 'gallon' I was guestimating. I learned the part about 'if I let the carb run dry' when I got stuck by the side of the road the other day! Your explanation does make clear what was going on. At the time I did not use PRI (prime) because I didn't think of it, not really knowing what it's for. So I kicked quite a few times until the bike started. What confused me is that there was a small amount of 'overflow' from what appears to be a vent/overflow tube on the bowl (not original carb), everytime I tried kicking it over. I didn't know if I had flooded it in my first attempts to re-start. You have made things a bit more understandable. I appreciate this site *very much*. I've been learning quite a bit, as well as finding the good company of SR riders...
