My 78 is getting poor gas mileage...around 37-40 mpg. The PO put on a larger carb, though I can't see what size. Bike runs pretty well, but a little rough off a stop light, and the poor mileage.
I'm wondering if I ought to install an original carb and throttle. What are the advantages or disadvantages of the original setup?
This bike is my daily ride on the interstate and around town.
Rodentrancher, your bike has an original carb. What do you think?
Thanks!

That's exactly what I'm doing to my '78. Back to the stock 34mm pumper instead of the 36mm aftermarket carby that was added by a po. From what I've heard, the pumper carb gives you more even throttle response. Cutting the slide (Minton mod) increases the performance as well. I'm sure others will have more to add... Gary Hopwheels

Hi, The SR's 34mm carb has proven to be OK; well at least I've never had any problems with them anyway... I'm not so positive about the 32mm carb though...my experiences with the SR's 32 have been all bad! I have had 3 bikes with these so far, all carbs have failed! If you're going to put the SR carb back, search for a 34mm...E or F model carb... As Gary said, the pumper carbs do give better immediate response off the mark. You used to be able to get 'bolt-on' pumper kits for the round slide Mikuni's as well...not sure if these kits are still available? SR

Well, the PO on my '78 installed a weird kludge of an aftermarket exhaust system, and the bike was running horribly lean with the stock carb. I've finished the Minton mods on the VM34SS, but I haven't had time to put it back on the bike and see how she rides yet. Next weekend, I hope. If so, I'll post what it's like. Another possibility might be the 36mm flat slide pumper Mikuni listed on the ThumperStuff site. Ought to help with the throttle response - probably not with the mileage
