Trying to take the stock carb apart from my '78 SR to do the Minton mods, and I've run into a weird issue. The float bowl won't come off - it might as well be welded in place. Here's what I've tried so far: After removing the four screws that hold the bowl to the main carb body, I tried prying the two pieces apart. No dice. I then tried running a thin knife blade around the seam, and more prying (to the point of bending the shaft of a fair-sized screwdriver). Wouldn't budge. So, I sprayed the joint heavily with penetrating oil, and let it sit overnight. Then I rapped it all around with a padded mallet, and got two fair-sized folks to try and pull the two pieces apart. Nothing doing. So at this point, I figure maybe a previous owner used some kind of adhesive on the gasket. I spray the joint with some super-dooper eats-paint-and-plastic aerosol carb cleaner, hoping maybe I can dissolve the crap. More pulling and prying - and it still won't budge. Anyone have any other ideas I can try? Or is it aftermarket carb time?

NM, finally got it apart. The secret was lots of carb cleaner applied to the joint and a great deal of prying.
Now, if only the floats aren't too badly trashed from contact with the carb cleaner - they're the one part I don't have a replacement for.

I'm impressed the float bowl/chamber took the beating! While cleaning and rebuilding the Amal carbs for my Triumph project, one of the float bowls simply cracked and broke from age and metal fatigue. That bike is only 3 years older than my Yamaha. I assume you promptly rinsed the floats well? The carb cleaner probably didn't get to them too badly, given how tightly sealed the gasket was.

Yep, I had the same problem years ago...they pretty well glue themselves on...can be very hard to remove on occassions...
