My new 36mm Mikuni round slide has a choke lever with a fairly short throw, as if it is either ON or OFF. Has anyone tried to place the lever in the middle of its range for starting purposes?
I ask because I am still having trouble starting the bike. It seems to be too rich with full choke, and too lean with no choke!!!

Hi, I do this with my SR with the 38mm on it. Works fine on that position on mine...can be a little problematic sitting it there for starting....the Mikuni manual says above 68F you shouldn't need it....not always been my experience...
Still sounds a little like a pilot jet issue in a way. If you not affecting the mixture much until a fair way out on the screw try going to the next size PJ down...and try again...
The other issue is the slide cutaway and float height will alter the fuel flow and fuel response time on throttle opening as well.
It's worth persevering to get a good setting as once it's done it'll stay pretty well right...in racing you chase baro pressure, temp etc. to try and get it perfect, but for the road I find adjustment of the mixture screw usually is enough for most purposes...
Keep trying...

SR -
Glad to hear that half-choke works for you. I'll be trying it this weekend.
I'm about 2 1/4 turns out on the pilot screw, so within the Mikuni manual's 2 1/2 turn limit, but maybe indicative that I could step down on PJ size. That's my next approach if the half-choke doesn't improve things...
