The simplest solution is the Mikuni VM series round slide. Easy to get and foolproof. There is a lot of jetting information around for these and the 36's. Once setup there are rarely any problems with these ever...and you'll probably also get a power increase.
For new carbs try Sudco, or similar in the US. In Aus. try Ian Williams Tuning in Adelaide...second-hand try the wreckers...I understand that Thumper Stuff also do 36 and 38 kits.
Remember you'll probably need another throttle assembly, unless you want to go to the trouble of modifying a throttle cable to suit the different carb and the existing SR throttle. On two of my bikes I have one with a Sudco 38mm and a another with a Yam TZ350 38mm PJ carby; both bikes are fitted with QA throttles.
I have also bought a Kei Hin CRS 38mm carby for one of my other bikes. These are a lot more expensive than the Mikuni's but they do give better performance and they are also a beautifully made thing. They even have small ball bearing assemblies for the bellcrank to rotate on! Typical Kei Hin; what other carb has this?
These carbs are harder to get hold of, but they do make a special 38mm carby for the SR's that is available from Japan (Kei Hin part number - R99AC). The SR CRS carb comes with a Mikuni style spigot to fit into the SR manifold...if you havn't seen a CRS it is a little hard to explain. Look them up on the net...
Here in Aus, and possibly in the US, they seem to only sell the CRS 39's...and then they have to be modified to fit. As a rule it seems that Mikuni's are in even numbers, 32,34,36 etc, and the Kei Hins are in odd numbers, 33, 35, 39 etc. Unusually the SR fit carb is a 38mm...why? As I said though, these are not cheap carbs.
The Japanese also fit the flat slide Kei Hin FCR's as well; these are possibly the best carbs now publically available;...they look a bit strange on the SR's as they are angled backward when fitted...they are really made for down-draught heads on modern superbikes. Not sure how they go with the float levels in this application, however many in Japan seem to use them. These though are even more expensive than the CRS's.
Hope this helps,
SR
