I'm trying to get the 32mm Mikuni dialed in on my 1981 [totally stock] SR500. Having trouble getting the bike to idle down without quitting.
Mick has been helping me [see thread below], and suggested that I find out what everyone might be using for jet and needle sizes [especially clip location] on their 1981 carbs.
Any information and experiences with the later carb would be appreciated!
As a last resort - if anyone has successfully substituted an earlier 34mm carb for the later one, I'd like to know the details.

Hi mate, I have often had problems with the '81 32mm carb. Usually if I keep having problems (...which it seems I usually do) I get rid of it and either place a 34mm from an E or F model on it, or get a normal round slide Mikuni, 36 or 38mm. I prefer 38'S...
The earlier 34mm carb just fits straight on with no fuss and works straight away. Cables and all.
The replacement Mikuni's need to be jetted to suit, but when sorted they are absolutely trouble free. You'd need to change the throttle and cable assy, or make a hybrid cable to suit the SR's throttle setup and the round slide's cable end. This can be done OK. Depends on how much time you want to spend to set it up and whether originality of the switch blocks etc. is an issue.
On that year model bike the carby can be a real pain.

Stew,
Thanks very much for the info.
I was hoping that the 34mm carb was a direct replacement.
I am going to place a wanted ad on this forum for a stock 34mm carb. Do you have any other resources for finding this carb?
Thanks again, ccvogel

This Carb is 32mm and Direct replacement on SR500==Cables and all. Late 1977 TT500 Carburetor. It is a 32 mm bore. Will work on 34 mm bore SR 500. This model carburetor is more tuner friendly than the pumper-jet models on 1980 and on. Besides, it doesn't have all the expensive diaphrams. Since I put this carb on my '81 SR500, I've had no problems w/starting or idling. I was constantly working on the original pumper carb. You should be able to find one of these carbs on eBay. They show up from time to time.==Chris

topdog -
Thanks for the offer, but I decided to go the aftermarket route. Bought a 36mm Mikuni round slide kit from Thumper Stuff.
Regards, ccvogel

Hi, Good to see that you've gone that route. I reckon you won't regret it.
