I recently bought a 1981 sr500. I fitted a K and N air filter on it and a supertrapp exhaust. When I am at cruising speed (55mph) and I let out the clutch the bike dies and I have to roll to a stop to kick it over. This has happened a few times to me and is quite discouraging. I have a stock carb and I have not re-jetted it in any way. I did take apart the carb once to clean it though. I am new to this whole experience so any input is greatly appreciated. Also, the problem does not seem to exist when I'm in lower gears. It feels like it wants to die when I am stopped so I have to goose the throttle to keep it alive. When I'm in a high gear and let out the clutch does my bike putter down and die. Does it have anything to do with the choke? I don't know what the problem is. What do I need to do?
Thank you in advance.

NO EXPERT WITH THIS BIKE YET, BUT ANYTIME YOU OPEN UP INTAKE AND/OR EXHAUST YOU NEED TO INCREASE JET SIZES.TRY RUNNING W/THE "CHOKE"(IBELIVE IT IS AN ENRICHNER I DON'T HAVE A STOCK CARB) SLIGHTLY OPEN AND SEE IF THIS HELPS, IF IT DOES JETS ARE TOO SMALL.YOU ALSO NEED TO CHECK FLOAT LEVEL AND PETCOCK FLOW AS THE PROBLEM YOU DESCRIBE COULD BE STARVATION.BOB

Hi, Look at the float level (that can cause starvation if too low) and also see if something has come loose in the bowl after you've put it back together. No dirt in the bowl..small pieces of fibre etc...
When you say you let the clutch out in top gear it cuts out, is that as you change gears? I'm not clear what you mean there...
The smaller '80-'81 year carbs can be a source of problem for a reason I am yet to understand...I have several of them here that I won't use. Once I replaced the smaller 32mm ones with the earlier 34mm...all worked well.
Going to a free'er pipe and filter usually entails an increase in MJ...say one size to start with.

Another thing to do if you can get it going OK in top gear...a plug chop.
Best done with a newish plug.
Full throttle and then once held there for a short while...cut the ignition and coast to a stop, clutch lever in...check the plug colour, it should be a nice tan colour...
Black=too rich; white or light grey=too lean....unleaded fuel can be a problem with colouring but should be somewhere near to this.
If black, leaner MJ...if the opposite, larger MJ...go one jet size at a time...repeat until OK...

My name is Gary and I am the admin of this board. I created it a few years ago in an attempt to fill a void in info sharing for the SR. We have a great group of people here, a very friendly environment for all. No bashing, foul language etc... I thank you for your input on the censored words. The benefits of the list out weigh the odd in-convenience it may cause. You can try to sub the word fuel shut-off in place of petc@(k. I'm sure everyone will recognize that one. One other thing, if you don't mind. Would you refrain from using caps all the time. It just seems proper etiquette on forums to not use them unless you are trying to yell at someone. Thanks in advance, Gary.(G Man)
