Well, just came back from a test ride after installing the new Mikuni 36mm. Had it to 85 mph with it on this curvy country road still gradually rising but I got skeered so I backed off. The bike ran great and seemed to be smoother also with no spark knock. The plug looks like it's browning up nicely but it was only a 14 mile run. I'll check it after a longer trip. I had a heck of a time starting it. I flooded the heck out of it with the fuel enrichener. I finally backed out the air screw to 2 1/2 turns and finally got it started. Had good response and a nice steady idle. After a good warm-up I could get the idle to increase with the air screw almost falling out so a smaller pilot jet is in order which is probably why I had such a hard time starting it. Anyway, I'm a happy camper. I 'll do a few tweaks here and there and be done. Back in the saddle again . Now for a decent exhaust system............ Bronson7

Excellent Bronson. With enough determination, you have got her back on the road. As for the exhaust...

Well done! Good to see the back of the standard carb isn't it. Polish it up and place it on a pice of wood as a display.
38 works well too...bit more zap..but with anything like a standard pipe forget it...
On my other E model I run a standard header and a Staintune Conti replica...little bit loud though. Wear ear plugs!

Bronson, Read your post with interest. I'm trying to make my '78 run with the stock carb. Can I take it from your comments that winding the airscrew out leans out the mixture, and winding it in richens things up? I'm trying to get rid of some truly unrideable missing and stumbling at 4000 rpm. If driven through this, things smooth out at 5 grand, but by then I am past relaxed putting speed, and starting to have to pay too much attention. So far the most useable change has been to drop the needle which has made the bike run relatively smoothly at 4000rpm on flat ground, but has introduced pinging if I do anything like hit a serious headwind, carry a passenger, go uphill, etc. I have wound the airscrew in and out a bit, which helped me identify a band where things work, but I'd like to be on the rich side of the band. If I burn the piston by running too lean, the bike will be in the shed forever. Any advice greatly appreciated. Mick

Hi Mick. Well, I've installed an after market Mikuni, so the pilot screw is an air mixture screw, so turning it out leans the mixture. The stock carb is a fuel mixture screw, so turning it in leans it. The difference is where the mixture screw is located. If it's forward of the slide, as in the stock carb, then turning out enrichens it. I don't know how the increased comp ratio is going to affect your carb. Before I went to the aftermarket carb, I performed the Minton mod but it helped very little. I replaced everything in my stock carb and could never get it to work. I strongly suspect that it has an oversized piston and was just plane fuel starved with the stock carb. So fuel starved, in fact, it was causing severe pinging. Yours, on the other hand sounds like a timming problem as you're getting a rick mixture. Have you played with the timming some? I believe on the '78 you have a little bit of adjustment available. Mine's an '80 with no adjustment. . Try putting everthing back where it was. Do only one thing at a time so you know what you've done and how it affects the bike. I can see where an increase in comp ratio would have an effect on timming. Bronson7
