I swear I've read here somewhere that stock sportster mufflers fit straight on and are less restrictive. After reading a post from Carl about bikes hitting the wall at 5000 grand or so, I'm eager to try a new muffler on my bike. It takes off very well, but when it hits about 5000, maybe 5500, it definitely hits the wall. Stock Harley mufflers seem very cheap on EBay, no doubt because everyone who buys a harley immediately goes aftermarket. So, does a sporty muffler fit the end of the head pipe, if so what model, is it really an improvement, and what diameter is the end of the head pipe anyway? Any advice, guys? Mick

Hi Mick, just bear this in mind when fitting another muffler:-there is not a lot of room to play with if you are using the stock header pipe because it runs very near to the engine.footrest and rearbrake lever.i've looked at other options too,one possibility is to make a short extention that gets you over this problem I eventually went for a goldstar replica muffler and had to gently with a wooden mallet put a slight dent in it to clear the brake lever .On the subject of topping out at 5000 revs or similar a straight through muffler will help but dont think it will answer your problem,i too felt my bike wasnt achieving top end,i eventually went for a top end re-build rebore new piston etc this was a BIG improvement,it cant wait to get there now! Obviously run all the usual checks before going to this length but i reckon if theres one thing that these singles need its good compression.keep me posted as to the muffler improvements, good luck.

Thanks Andy, One thing my baby's got is lots of compression. 10:1 Wiseco - can stand on the kick starter at times, without moving it. I zeroed in on the muffler because of a couple of things. Some of the posts here for starters - especially what Carl (stopusingmyname) was saying about reverse megas, etc. Then there was the comments I get from other people about how quiet my bike is, which makes me think its a bit restricted. Then there was my experience at the TT/XT500 muster. It seemed there was a direct correlation between noise and performance. There was no doubt about it on the road ride - the loud bikes were very quick. So, when I saw how cheap some of the harley mufflers are on Ebay, I thought its worth a try............ But, can any one tell me what sort of compression reading is good? 140 psi maybe? Mick

O.K Mick,140 p.s.i is great so it definitely aint compression!have a look on the biebo german website they do 2 reverse megas, short and long, having dealt with them for numerous items i can recommend them for quick delivery, quality and price.Having tried various mufflers i keep going back to the 'goldie' for sound and performance,o.k the reverse mega might be a better looking job but i suppose it depends on what your trying to achieve.

I ordered some things through Biebo, reccomended.
It took about a fortnight delivered to my door in Sydney, and that was over Christmas with the public holidays etc.
Don't know about their mufflers though
