Hi chaps, Struggling through my work on the '81 SR, I bought one of the Enfield style mufflers from Biebo at kickstarter classics on ebay - and stupidly did not translate the part that says I'll need the reduction adaptors! (or the bit that says you have to cut off the front bracket to make it fit!!) Lesson learned - babelfish.com is your friend ;-)
All good - my header has an O/D of 38mm (1.5 in) and the new pipe has an O/D of 48mm (1.9 in(ish)) - do you guys think I should just order the reducer (ebay #290130673321) or is there a better way do this??
Cheers Roadster

Maybe check the price for an exhaust shop, like Midas or the like, to make a reducer for you? It could be cheaper?

The OD of the header...is that at the reduced part of the OD before the muffler? I'd have to go to the shed to measure one up... 10mm is a fair step...you'd notice it if it's the OD of the major part of the header...depends on the look you're after... As Bize says, it's probably not a bad idea to see if someone can make a tubular adaptor to go between the two...a tapering one would be best to make it not so obvious. I machined a straight adapter to fit a Conti from a Duc 750 Sport to go onto my little Ducati single. The step was too obvious and I didn't like the look so I now have that on my SR...went straight onto the the SR...plus brackets... If you do get one made from tubing, make sure you either chrome it or paint it heat proof silver so it doesn't stand out. Good luck...I haven't looked on e-bay to see what they offer yet... SR

Thanks for the ideas guys. SR - yeah that OD is the reduced part of the header - maybe make it not so obvious if I get a reducer made up like Bize suggests?!

Yes you could do it there with a machined sleeve and it might not look bad...see how you go. SR

Just to finish this story - I realised that the bike had an aftermarket muffler on it, and had an adaptor sleeve already! So I just took it off, reversed it and bingo, problem solved. A bonus is that it's about 6 inches long, and so if I ever get serious about tuning I'll be able to adjust the length of the system :-)
