Hi All, I have had the big bore kit put in my 1978 SR 500, I also had a webcamshaft cam put in with new valves and springs, it purrs like a kitten and really rockets now. I have the stock head pipe on now, with a Mac muffler, I want to modifty my exhaust to point up on a 45 degree angle out the back, much like this SR I am in the process of building my rearsets, so I am hoping that i dont have to do too many modifications to the exhaust to make it go up like that, Do I need to use an aftermarket header? or will the stock one be fine? how does it flow? I have a pod filter on right now and I do not see the point in having it suck in air without letting it breath it out as well as it could be, how much advantage is there over a stock pipe as to opposed a super trapp, or white brothers, or having an exhaust shop build me one out of stainless? Thanks for your time, Curtis

You dont mention if you are still running a stock carb. With the big bore kit and cam a 36-38mm mikuni would be the ticket. With the intake breathing nicely then a larger header pipe with a free flowing exhaust would round out the package nicely. Aftermarket headers are available and there are several posts in this topic that refers to them. Should not be a great deal of work to get the pipe sitting where you want it.
Good luck.

Hi,
Still orginal pumper carb, but working on a 36 mm mikuni round slide, having some issues with jetting though, so hopefully i will have that all sorted out soon enough, the riding season is almost over and i just ordered my clip ons today, so, between fitting the clip ons, jetting the 36 mm carb, getting the shorter clutch cable, finishing my rear sets, and rebuilding all three calipers, i am going to be well into fall/early winter before this baby is ready to rock, which means, i can find more stuff to add to it over winter (i been eye balling some awesome gauges, little bit smaller, chrome, light up blue, would look fantastic on there)
I phoned a few exhaust shops today and one near by says they can bend (mandrel bend) stainless steel, inch and three quarters, with a collar on the end for the flange to butt up to, run a mid pipe that points my muffler up (going to an automotive flea market this weekend, hoping to find a different canister, something a little nicer then my P.O.S.) have it all installed on the bike for about 250 bucks, I know the guys are amazing, they did the true duals in my buddys 78 ford f150, and they are just, an awesome fabricator,
How important is it for bends, do i need like, right on the money, or is there some lee way available?
Thanks,

Price sounds good. When they bend the pipe just make sure it clears everything and looks right. Dont want it rubbing anywhere or burning your leg...

OK, cant have it done this weekend, need a new can first, so, hopefully a few weeks i will be able to load the bike up and they can fabricate it on while i wait and get it rockin.
Thanks,
Curtis

Hey Curtis, I am a newbie on this list and am facing a similar scenario in my garage. I was hoping to get some advise from you and those reading your thread with experience about your setup- I am working on a similar setup for my '78 SR. Its currently have a JE 534 90mm 11.0 (actually 10.5 with copper gasket) kit WebCam mild grind sport cam(.440/280˙/260˙/89a) with upgraded springs/retainers, K&N filter, White Bros header, flow thru exhaust (a little loud and raspy... at least they'll hear me coming). Its got the stock 34ss Mikuni right now. My challenge is now resting in carbie and jetting choices... Do you or anyone here have any suggestions on both those topics? I need to keep some low end grunt for the stop and go traffic I have to deal with these days unfortunately (hence the compromises above) but would like to feel like the effort was worth it on the twisties. Any help from you or any of the readers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Try lifting the needle at least one clip, the main jet about a 320, one size up on the pilot, a BIG K&N filter and maybe a boner is on the way !!! Carl...
