I rebuilding/restoring a '78 SR on a tight budget. Would it be possible to modify the original exahaust to make the bike breath a little easier. A friend of my have put on a BSA Goldstar "muffler", with great success. I'm thinking: cut of the box on the innerside of the muffler and weld the hole, make the muffler shorter, cutting of the cowl at the back and weld it back on, maybe get rid of the interior, or some of it. Maybe a stupid question, but I give it a try. Christer

Hi Christer, One of my SR's came with the pipe modified like that...more or less. The box was gone and plated over; the end was still intact but the centre tube had been removed. It had a centre similar to a Conti in some ways...sounded a little better than standard, and seemed to go a little better. It was also lighter of course. I'd say that it'd take a bit of effort to remove the centre pipe and you may need to make some extra internal holes where the box comes off...just guessing here. If you cut and shut the back end though the chrome will probably look a bit rough?? SR

...one other thing of course...you are able to buy Dunstall replica mufflers for a fairly cheap price around the place, perhaps e-bay...saves ruining the standard pipe if you ever need to quieten it down again for some reason?
These are fairly easily mounted and look pretty good..shorter than standard...

Thank you.
The chrome will certainly be gone in the spots where I'm gonna weld it. Thinking of painting the muffler black...
Have finally got the bike home, and can start the build up. All the tinware will be sanded and primed this weekend. The frame and wheels are in nice shape, so they will be left as is. I am satisfied with the overall condition of the bike. Nice that all the parts are there, very much unlike the BSA I restored a few years ago.
Thank you for the help so far.

I'm running the Dunstall and love the sound. Can't comment to performance gain, since I've never had a stock muffler on.

Hi.
I did it ;D
Chopped off the lunchbox, cut of about 10 cm of the rear end of the silencer, also cut of the cowl, which will be welded back on. I'm gonna patch in a sheet over the hole where the box was. Inside the can is now one pipe merging into three smaller ones at the rear. Reckon it's gonna be loud...I certainly gonna meet some challenges with carburation/air filter, but I'm gonna give it a try.

Not the prettiest pipe, but the "fried-egg" cut tip makes me feel like I'm cruising a P41.

Hi. Like the look of your exhaust. Have welded mine back together and painted it black....real homebrew look, but it will do for now. Send me pictures of your bike so I can post it on my website. home.online.no/~cfolkeChrister
