I was wondering if someone knows the correct size of clubman bars that can be used on an 78' SR500?? Stock bars sit up a bit high and I really love the cafe racer look that the clubmans give it. If anyone has any other bars that you can recommend, please do so. Thanks gang!!

try super bike bars- low but still have very small rise. also drag bars are nice. ace bars(cafe) are very low and can be uncomfortable after a while.

For a cheapy I just reversed my stock bars , it actually works & looks OK , I've been on a couple of 40k rides & it feels good (put your feet into the passenger footrests on the open road) feels better ,takes the strain off your back as the wind gets under your chest cheers Dave.

I have a set of cheapie Clubmans, they are in bike shops over here for maybe $22US or so. I love them around town but a couple hours is my limit. I have Superbikes on my XS650 and those would work great on the SR.
(BTW, I used to run Clubmans "upside down" on my XS and that was good but I prefer the Superbikes.)

Mine has clip ons, but attached where the forks protrude up through the triple clamps - so basically the same riding position as flat/drag bars.

I use drag bars, comfy and good looking (esp. with bar end mirrors). I suspect though that it would make a difference to rear-set the pegs a little, maybe even just to remove their brace and place them in the spot where it bolts on - ie only a couple of inches back from standard.

So milkman, you have your forks protruding up through the clamps enough to bolt on some clipons? That would lower the front maybe 30mm or so? Stock position on my '78 is with the forks just a mm or 2 abopve the clamp. What is your take on the effect on handling? Mick

Set up was all done previous owner, and its my first SR so hard to give a comparison over stock, or in terms of an improvement.
The bike does tip in easily to corner though I've never really given it a real spirited ride - previous owner put a front drum from a 70's honda dirt bike on the front, for a "classic look".
I like classic looks, but not so much the "help me lord jesus make this corner I can't stop" performance

Just a comment on bars to add : I've had drag bars for a few months now, and increasingly I'm getting pain lingering in my right wrist (and yesterday, following a big ride, my forearm) which has me a bit worried, as it is getting worse and longer lasting. There's pressure on my wrist and fore-arm with them, and my wrist tends to angle harder right with the more-straight style of bar. I changed back to bars in the style of the OEM, though an inch or two wider, and I must say that when God created the SR in his mind, he got it right the first time, stock! (Well, except maybe for the super-70's indicators and the K-Mart tail-light!) The stock bars, as most will know, mean a much less sporty bike - one can lean down on the drag bars during cornering - but returning to the stock position it's so comfy and neutral!

A nice bend of bar can be had by asking your local shop for the RDLC yam bend of the CB400F honda bend, commonly referred to as the "pommy touring spec" bars, they work well on SR's with about 20mm chopped off the ends and the bike still looks fairly stock, thats my 2 bobs worth for today. or for the clip on boys a set of 2KR FZR250 clip ons under the clamp. regards carl.

What have you guys done to keep the bars and mirrors from vibrating so much such as putting lead shot or silicon rubber inside the bars? Does anything like that really work?

I never had much problem with my Clubmans vibrating, but I made a couple large brass bar-end weights anyway (as much for looks as function). They might have changed it a bit. On my XS650 I put 8" steel slugs inside the Superbike bars, that definitely helped.
