I'm looking into changing the rims on my cafe racer SR. I'm thinking a set of 18" excel's for the front and back but I'm pondering over width. I've been told that a skinnier wheel on these older bikes yields better performance on the track. Does anyone have any sugestions or examples of what they ride?

Depends on what you mean by skinny. Skinnier than the new generation rims on Supersport bikes, for sure.
I race my SR and I run 2.15" x 18 front and when I manage to find the right hub for the rear, a 2.5" x 18 rear.
Anything wider than this will not work on the SR.
18" front makes it steer much quicker, so beware on the road!

I agree with Wizz. I run a 2.15x18 on the front and a 2.5x18 on the rear of my cafe racer fitted with a 100/90 front tyre and 120/90 rear tyre.

That's pretty well what I'm doing on my new cafe racer as well... On the other hand the Japanese seem to now go for 17" rims with wider rims and tyres...that would probably reqiuire a different swing arm though. SR

Hmm for some reason I wan't sent an email about replies to my topic. Thanks guys. One more question...........are you using the SR hubs or replacing them with something different. I'm using an XS650 front \hub with dual disk brakes at the moment and an XS drum brake in the back.

Hmm for some reason I wan't sent an email about replies to my topic. ... Just an FYI. The bookmark and notification system works great. However, you must first set it up in your profile. Step 1: Look at the menu bar at the top of any page and click "profile" Step 2: Click "bookmarks" Step 3: Click on the yellow line that says "...manage your bookmarks..." Step 4: Choose your method of notification. (By default there is no notification!) Step 5: Update. Hope this helps, G Man

Hi G Man,
I've been trying to find that option for months and still couldn't find it. I noticed the yellow bar, but there is no option to manage bookmarks, but when I move my cursor across to the right side of the yellow bar, I see the "hand" appear so I clicked and hey presto, I get to the manage bookmarks page! The manage bookmarks option is invisible on my computer... anyone else have this problem?

Christoph, I'm using xS650 front hub as well. Rear is stock cast wheel but I have an XT500 hub that I may put in, but it's a drum and I'm running a disc setup at the moment. I prefer a disc setup but finding a suitable hub with disc is the problem.

wizz954 I'm also trying to figure out how to order an aftermarket hub for the SR. There is a motard sop down the road who says they can put together a front and rear set for $1500 canadian dollars (about $1625.00 in AUz) which is a bit steep for this project. I've been looking for a website that sells all the different rim and hub sizes so that I can piece together a set on your own but I haven't found anything yet. Any sugestions?

I've been looking at Talon hubs and they don't have anything to suit the SR500. There's a guy in Queensland who imports Talon hubs and he has 2 SR500s of his own, so if he can't find anything to suit, I would say we're out of luck! The SR500 swingarm is much narrower than modern bikes and most hubs these days are much wider. If you find a solution, I'd be interested too. Stewross is working on adapting a DR650 hub, but it is not a simple bolt up job.

The Japanese use a couple of different hubs including the TDR250 Yam one. These can be hard to find as I now know. So I have decided to use the DR650 rear hub. I't'll work but it may require a little modification. The new rim may have to be offset a little to the left as well...all good cafe racer mods. I am removing the perfect condition 17" rim and spokes fitting an 18" Excel rim and stainless spokes. Once I've done it I'll post how to do it. The only difference with mine is that I'll more than likely be getting a different swing arm made for the bike so there may be differences there. I am also intending to use the original size axle...20mm. The R250CD rear wheel will work as well if you could find one and you'd probably need to space the sprocket further out on one of those...the hubs from the RD's and TZ's etc. are the other way and are narrower than the SR. Don't give up just yet... SR

I have also been searching for wheels for my track bike project and so far not too much luck.(found bare SR rear mag for $100 in adelaide, bit expensive though)
There is a local wrecker in my area that has TZ350 wheels kicking around for a good price. Anybody had anything to do with these wheels??

Hey Fenz,
I stopped in at Japanese M/C Dismantlers in Adelaide the other Saturday, (the 14th I think it was) and a guy was just leaving on a SR! Was that you?
I was looking for a a drum braked rear SR mag and actually bought one from them for $100 complete with brake plate, shoes etc. I thought it was not too bad a price all things considered. While looking at the wheels they had, the old guy there found a SR400 (labeled as SR500) drum brake rear wire wheel with the alloy rim, looked if fairly good nick, they want $250 for it. He said that the guy on the SR that just left was looking for such a wheel. So agian was it you? If so I would give them a call.
