A short PVC spacer is a sign that the bike may have Progressive springs - they rec that you replace the spacer with a 1/2" something, Thuperstuff says to use PVC. the spacer looks like it's about 1" long. it's jammed in there pretty good though. I dont want to damage anything trying to pry it out. I wouldn't even know how to do so.

Well, when you do get the fork apart, consider installing a Progressive front spring set if it doesn't have one in there already.

Maybe take a small chisel and carefully split the PVC along one side, until you can pry up one edge with a screwdriver? Accidentally scoring the inside of the fork tube shouldn't cause any problems up at the top.

I have the forks in my truck and will be taking them to yamaha today when they open. I'll let you know what they have to say about them.

I hate to hijack a thread, but I do have a question. My bike has 25 pounds of air pressure. Since I've never heard anyone mention air pressure, I'm assuming these are not stock forks. Am I correct?

Hi guys, 25 psi sounds like awhole lot more than you need. I was always told that much over 5psi can lead to leaking fork seals, and to use them more to let air out than to put air in. The theory behind this is the forks can pump up over time especially in hot weather. For cordodor, after you fit the new seals, spray a little silicon spray on the fork leg before you slide the leg back in. There is usually a little bit of sticking between the new seal and the old leg for a while, and the silicon will help prevent this. cHEERS fRANKY B.

Maybe you have it fixed by now, but I have a couple bad ideas:
Since the spacer is plastic, could you possibly heat it with a torch or heatgun? (don't get the spring too hot)
Can you compress the fork by hand at al? That would put some more pressure on the spring, maybe coaxing it out. Make sure you don't aim the spring at anything though... no telling how far it could fly if it dislodged while compressed.
I can confirm that the stock arrangement for 1978 and 1981 SR500 springs are the same. When the fork caps are off the top, the springs lay at rest only about an inch or two above the top of the fork tube. The springs are notably long, and slightly progressive. You have to look quite closely to see which end has the tighter coils.

i had this exact same problem!!!!! i just very carefully used a sharp knife to strip the rubber of the old seals then used a screwdriver to pry it off the tube upwards and off the top of the forks then put the new ones on from the top.

thanks for the advice everyone. I ended up taking them into a shop and having them mess with them. Hopefully all I'll have to deal with, for a while anyways, is fork oil. that i can do
