Hello... I figured that since I no longer own an SR, I'd assuage my soul by yabbering about same. The SR? It used to belong to "Sleepy" John Ewing who now lives in Bathurst. (He's Oz's Number One tuner of DT and RT type engines.) I bought it in about 1988. I sold it about 3 weeks ago. It was a flaming good bike. It now belongs to Guy "Guido" Allen, the journo extraordinaire. My current bikes are a Honda VT500 and a Harris Matchless 500 single, so I can't give up either 500s or singles. There are about 10 or 12 bikes back in the shed as well. I'm looking forward to learning even more about the mighty SR. And I'm going to get myself another one...with slightly fewer miles on the clock. Coo-ee...

Welcome aboard mate.
What model VT is it. I used to have a VT500E until I sold it earlier this year.

Welcome
I think we may have exchanged some very drunken banter at the Bike Australia Rally at Genoa back in the early eighties. when I have a feeling you were riding an MZ 250.
Cheers Rich

Bize! That's it...a VT500E. And what a wonderful bike it is. The last owner couldn't give it away! Until he found me. And then he did give it away. And... RD! That was indeed me at the Bike Australia Rally. The MZ was a 250 ETZ. I bought the same bike about ten years ago. Cost me $600...which is what I sold it for about a year later. I'd like to get a 301 MZ, which despite its name is a 298cc two-stroke single. And that just slips under the rego laws in newsouthwales. I forget talking to you...a fact that I'm very sorry about. I'm glad we've caught up again.

Yeah I was lucky enough to be given my VT as well. I fixed it up, got it back on the road and enjoyed it for about 6 months before selling it. I was very tempted to keep it, but I wanted the cash and it was always only ever a project bike for me.

OOhhh internal front disc.I have a rolling bike with no motor leaning against the back of my shed. A guy had modded it for a 500 yam motor but never used it,passed it onto me cause he knew i was into 500 yams. What do those front brakes work like???

Fenz,
As someone who worked as a mechanic for a Honda dealer when the internal disc brakes were introduced, thet were a pain in the ase. The CB550 had double internal discs and they were even a bigger pain!

Fenz... They work like sticking your foot into a bucket of strawberry jam. They don't work well for a disc. But on a nice slow bike like the VT500 they're fine. One the CBX550, which has twice the braking power, they work like sticking both of your feet into buckets of strawberry jam. Then again, it's only a Honda 550. I could tell you a nice story of one of the going "BOOMPF" under me while riding over Westgate Bridge in Melbourne. And Bize... You've stolen my bike! Seriously, Honda tells me that they only brought one container of them into the country in 1983. That accounts for 1) their price (they were relatively expensive), 2) why the chassis are laying up against sheds like Colin's, and 3) why there are so few of them available second-hand.

Yeah the front brake on the VT was dreadfull, but then againt the 24 year old brake lines wouldn't have helped much. Also you need to remove the front wheel just to check the pads, little own replace them.
They're rare over here? I wish I had have known that when I sold it. I only asked for $2,000 for it. Still I can't complain, I still made over 100% profit on that sale.

The rear wheel may get used for some thing one day as its an 18" and appears to be very light but as for the rest hmmm who knows not really one to throw things away as you just never no one day i might need...........................

Fenz: If you're talking about the rear wheel off VT, just be cautious. Those pressed wheels aren't the best design out there and are more likely to fail than a cast or wire wheel. Regularily check around all the joind for cracks, lose rivets wear marks etc.

Stew... Yep, Guido has the impressive Mr Smith Yamaha SR500. Er...I say it's impressive because in the pile of bit there are a few engines,a couple of sets of wheels, lots of oil thingies, etc. I loved that bike, even though it's disinegrated over the past years. The story is that Grant (Roff...collector of stuff, for those who don't know) will be there on his Tingate Special. And they will be at this year's rally, along with me. Coo-ee... Peter Smith
