I have Zero idea which forum to post this in, because I have ZERO idea what this part is.
There is a keyed device on the anterior side of the battery box, immediately adjacent to it. What is it for? Do I need to keep it?
Thanks!

The side covers cost more than the battery these days.

I've taken it off mine, but it seems like there was a helmet lock with it. ( ) Also there was a case behind the side cover for papers (I guess registration, insurance and so forth??) The tool kit is behind that side case too, so the lock was meant to keep the tools and any papers a tiny bit safer. I'd rather lose those than have the cover broken, but on the other hand, how are you going to fasten the side-cover without it? If you're going to keep the side cover, and you have to get a main switch key made anyway, you might as well keep it. It uses the same key.

I will look closer at this, this weekend. I am stripping the bike COMPLETELY apart (engine already out) to get the frame powdercoated.
I did however, get the side cover off the bike without having a key. Oh, but I am having keys made - right now = $25.00.
Thanks for all the input. I really appreciate it!
