Okay, forgive me if this is already here someplace, I tried to search but didn't find anything..
In my quest to get back on the road, I am now at the stage where I'm trying to figure out things that aren't working.
First off, my speedometer isn't working. How would one diagnose the problem?? I don't know if it's the cable, the speedometer itself - I'm going out to the garage to tinker in a little while..
Next up, I've read that these magical turn signals self-cancel after distance. IF the speedometer isn't working, then those wouldn't work quite right either, am I correct?? What kind of diagnostics would I look for in something like that? Is there a quick easy way to remove that part of the system and just have regular turn signals??

My '80 model turn signals do not self-cancel....ya gotta flick the switch. From what I'm told, the speedo and tach on the SR have a tendency to die from all the vibes over time. Usually an issue is caused by a cable needing lubrication or replacement. Try squirting some lube down the interstice and if that doesn't solve it, see if the cable itself is in one piece....chuck one end in a cordless drill and see if the other rotates after removing both ends from their respective "homes". Also might be a speedo drive gone South.....
My 2 cents...........good luck!

I'm thinking about fabbing up a GPS to put in there. More accurate than a mechanical unit!!

You could also use a bicycle computer.....programmable for wheel size, and cheap...35 bucks.....and small, battery operated. Some are wireless. Also, don't forget about Mike's XS.com. The smaller tachs and speedo aftermarket offerings are nice and will work on our SR's. Mounts available too.

That was my worry, the backlight - I guess I could mod some LEDs into the old housing and let them shine down whenever the lights are on..

I have one of these for the New Cafe Racer...might be worth considering. Two instruments in one...or more...depending on your specs. I have the black dash and I am measuring CHT as well...mine's the Vapor, nice little unit. trailtech.net/vapor.htmlSR

Wow! Neat little gizmo and for once it is a US company. Seems our stock OEM instruments go "toes up" eventually....these look vibration proof, etc. Thanks for the tip, Stew.

No worries, they're a neat little instrument. I have seen them used in kit cars as well. SR

The speedometer has a reed switch in it that connects every xx feet, turning the signals off (if they're on). If your speedo isn't working, no switch action and thus no signal cancel.
