I just purchased an XT500 and have plans to convert it to a cafe racer type thing. What suggestions do people have for tanks that would look suitable? Is there something out there that wil work with minimal modifications?

Huck,
The XT is a difficult bike to find another tank for due to the diameter of the frame backbone tube and the front tank mounts being bolts instead of the more conventional slide in rubber bushes. The tank is also relatively short compared to the tanks an a lot of road bikes.
You could try the tank from a mid/late 70's triumph twin which was also an "oil in frame" design with a large diameter frame backbone. There may be other bikes with similar large fame back bones but I can't think of any off the top of my head.
On my cafe racer I cut the bottom out of a badly dented SR tank and welded the top of a XS1 650 Yamaha tank onto it to get the look I wanted, but it was a lot of work!

Post a pic can you mate, I've never seen someones actual ice racer...... I'd be glad to post a pic if I could figure out how, The help system on here almost crashed my puter. Here is a cut and paste from an old post of mine. Hopefully you can make some sense of it. It kind of rambles on a bit... The easiest way to post a link to a pic is by having your pic hosted in a remote photo album such as tinypic (http://tinypic.com/). So, go there(see link in brackets). Click on the browse button. It will open a link to your computer. If it doesn't go directly to your "my pictures" folder, make your way there. Click on the picture in your "my pictures" folder and then click the button to "upload" to tinypic.com. Once the upload is complete, there are some url's you can choose from on tinypic. Copy one which will be a url address of your pic. Then, come back to the SR500 Forum. Start a message. Look above the message box you type in and right above the smilies there are some little boxes. Click the one with the little globe in it. In your message two url tags will have appeared like this, but without the put your url here: ( PUT YOUR URL HERE). You need to click in between the brackets so your curser is sitting there. Then paste the link you got at tinypic.com. (the url address of the pic supplied by tinypic after you uploaded it to their server) right where I have typed "PUT YOUR URL HERE". The above is for posting a link to your picture for us to view. If you wish to actually put the picture in the body of your message, you will do exactly as above, except instead of the url button with the globe, you will click on the box with the little picture in it. The [/img] tags will appear. Place your url in between the img tags and your pic should appear in the body of your message when you post your reply. If you still can't make it work, or have more questions, just let me know. Hope this helps. G Man

Hi Huck
That "little dirt bike thing" is am early YZ yamaha tank and if it is an aluminium one and in good condition under the paint could be worth a dollar or two.
Cheers Rich

Hi, Is there a fair bit of ice racing done over there? We seem to hear about it a fair bit on here. Do the tyres come with the spikes etc...or do you fit them yourself? I'd be concerned that you'd end up in the freezing water...not a good thought...although perhaps 18" of ice is a little hard to get through.... Tank looks like one from a YZ80... SR

The factory tank looks good for a cafe style bike. I have a TT500 that I am making into a cafe bike. Makes for a nice look if you ask me. Your best bet may be to sell your tank and buy a TT or XT tank for your bike. If you dont mind repairing dents they can be found for rather cheap. There is a local here that bought a XT aluminum tank for his SR cafe bike that had broken front mounts, he attaches the tank with leather straps and it looks sharp.
