I got a new TM36-68 off Ebay. 60 bucks. Will give it a go. It was half the price of all the diaphrams and carb bowl gasket shipped. Hoo Rah! Cliff

The Mikuni-America website has a very nice tuning manual available online. It is for the HS40 carburetor, but everthing in the manual applies to the TM36 as well. You got a great deal on eBay!

Howdy; I just got another SR 6 weeks ago. It has a Trapp header and muffler and a KN filter with an angled 3-4 inch snout on it so it fits better in the airbox area. Everything else on the engine is stock except for the overhead oiler. I messed around with the jetting 'cuz it was quite anemic. It has a Mik 36mm flatslide pumper on it.
pilot 17.5 screw 1.25 turns out main 150 needle clip second from leanest factory default needle jet (p-8) and needle. I get 50 mpg. and I ride 45 miles a day round trip to work. I also backed the pumper adjustment way off for better economy. It won't really buck until I lug it under 2750 rpm. My old bike with stock carb would buck at anything below 3 krpm. 11 discs in the Trapp. I like it, y'all be cool, Dave in Oregon

Ok, got the TM36-68. Fired up on the second kick no choke and embarrasingly in gear. Twas late and did not want to piss the neighbors so I shut it down after a few minutes of warm up. I was half expecting to kick the snot out of it. Will report back on the tuning. Pilot jet is the smaller 12.5 so I was expecting it to be lean and perhaps have to choke, but maybe its ok. Pilot adjustment is about two turns out. The main is 130. I think I already have a 140 and will try that once all the parts are on. POR 15'ed tank, rebuilt master cylinder for the front. Got the stator back with the metal frame cracked off at the pickup coil.. Cheap cast aluminum. Tied it back in with some strategic screws and glue. Can't say enough about RSstator. They were quick, reasonable and its putting out the fattest spark I have seen. Later, Cliff

Hi all, i allso have installed a tm36 recently and am very happy with it. Cliff i have been working the other way and have come down from the jets it had as delivered, i now have a 25 pilot and a 180 main and it's never run better, it has pulled an indicated 90mph plus(i will put my gps in my tank bag when i get a chanceto confirm this, my old 40mm cv carb would only pull 70) i have smaller jets on order.plugs look good but i will see how small i can go(now roughly 40mpg) who else out there has this carb and what jetting do you run? i'm rumming an1 3/4 headpipe, supertrap ann a mild cam, i think i can hit the ton:) Bob

No offense but with the stock carb I could do 90 and I got 55mpg. I am sure you are probably getting to 90 quicker based on your gas mileage. A 25 pilot sounds huge for a TM36. On mine with the stock pilot it kicks over first time with no choke and about 3 turns out on the pilot screw. I am running supertrapp and K&N filter. I still have three other things to do before I go on the road with it, but that will be after Sturgis. Later CLiff

55mpg at 90? I doubt it very much. I ride my SR to work, and I won't get 55 driving at those speeds on the motorway. It will average 55 if used at more sensible speeds.

no offense taken, as i said i'm working my way down, it was delivered w/ a 50pilot and 280 main and i had no refrence for a starting point.a 25 was the smallest i had on hand.on another post a while back others commented thet thier bikes would not pull much better then 70 mph in 4th or 5thand this was the case with mine.on my 70 mile round trip to work i t runs fine but i will continue to lean it out Aero, i don't think Cliff meant he was getting 55 mpg running 90. again i'm very happy with this carb and i' m sure as i work out the jetting it will only get better! Aero. No way 55 mpg at 90 mph. Nothing gets that...ha,ha..55 mpg is what i would get in general usage.
Oh, I see. Yes you are working your way down the jets. I guess better to start rich. Like I said. The few times I have started it was with no choke and the stock 12.5 pilot, or at least that is what they advertised. SO I am thinking it is rich with this small pilot, go figure. Revving the motor while on the stand gets a back fire now and then which tells me the needle maybe lean.
I read on a XR400 forum someone posted the stock needle does not work good and recommended one of the other needles. I dont know which at the moment there are not that many needles to choose from.
Steve also runs a 140 main on his HS40 (big brother to the TM-36) that he says he gets 60 mpg on. My main is a 130. I am not concerned about going 90 because it is scary at that speed. The SR500 seems to like to cruise at 65mph the best. It will go faster, no problem, but in my most humble opinion for horsepower, size and handling to me 65mph seems happy times. Cliff

The SR is back on the road. Just waiting for some jets from Sudco. They only sell 4 jets at a time. Anyone need a 17.5 pilot or a 140 main? The stock 12.5 and I am assuming the 130 main is way too lean. Since the pilot will affect WOT there is not way of knowing how the main will do, but everyone here seems to be happy with the 140 main for the Mikuni TM-36.

Hi, I read about m-jets more than 130 at a TM36. wow... I drive my low-budged-racer without filter with a trumpet and megafon at the carb and at the exhaust with 130 and ist is running 175km/h. If someone wants to optimize performance online you may buy an adjustable main jet for the TMs at Grobmotorik in Germany (49€). www.grobmotorik.de/Vergaser.htm It takes you 3 minutes to give the engine the best possible performance. Hi, absolutely easy. You change the main jet against the special jet, replace the aluminum screw against the brass part (looks like a tommy screw) and start the engine, drive...Turn to the right =lean turn to te left = richer. ready. Regards Rei97

For the TM-36 I have settled on the P-6 needle jet, stock needle (not that there are that many to choose from), running 130 main jet but will drop a 140 in soon for a test and a 17.5 pilot jet out about 2 turns. Needle is currently 3 from the top but may be a little rich. Also got the rubber boot carb holder, $19, from Mark Apland at Thumper Stuff. Much better than the stock. Cliff
