Now that my SR is running for the 1st time (for me), I am testing to make sure everything works. It seems the front turn signals are constantly on. Is that the way this bike was wired stock, and then the blink with the turn signal switch on? My flasher unit is not working. I know this because when testing the rear they just stayed on with the switch either left or right. Are the flasher units easy to find replacements for? Basically and 12v flasher will work, right?

The only way the turn signals will stay on is if someone has replaced them with different units having bulbs with dual filaments and wired up ones side to act as running lights. If you have stock units with one filament per bulb you must have one or more shorts somewhere. The flasher is supposed to interrupt current to the flasher lamps but only one side at a time is supposed to be selected depending on which way the turn signal switch is pushed. You need to get your ohmmeter out and determine why both L & R are getting power and why they aren't flashing.

One thing I did not mention. I checked the turn signals with the bike running, but NO battery. The Clymer wiring diagram I have leads me to believe the battery must be hooked up to make these operate properly (true or false?). I have the cancelling unit in place and it looks like the battery is an integral part of the system.

The battery makes no difference on the SR500 when it is running. You need it in place for the turn signals and lights to work when the engine is off though.

Well with a battery on the bike testing the electrical is very easy!
My problem was I was hooking up the 'brown' front brake light wire to the turn signal. I found the correct turn signal 'brown' wire and viola', everything works now. Here is just an FYI. I had a 12V turn signal flasher lying around out of one of my old classic cars (my '55 Chevy - I think). The flasher is a 2-prong and stock is a 3 prong. I plugged it in one way (two connectors) and it did not work. I then turn the unit 90 degrees and plugged it back in and YES my turn signals work. I think these flasher go for about $3 in an auto parts store.
Once again - this bike was left outside for 12 or 13 years and even the horn works!
