has anyone ever tried to fit one of those nice aluminum TT tanks on to a SR? if so, what mods were needed to make it work?

Do you mean the deus ones?
From what I understand you just swap the petcock over and away you go. I was thinking of getting one... and now everybody has 'em!

I have both an XT and SR. The tanks are not a straight swap, but would be pretty simple. You'd have to do a bit of messing around with the front mounts, the SR has a couple of sort of hook/cupped brackets that slip over a couple of rubber bung thingies. The XT/TT tank has a couple of "ears" that take bolts through grommets. I haven't actually measure up, but I reckon the mounts are at different heights on the frame, so a bit of fabrication might be required. The biggest thing might be getting and prepping a decent tank. BTW, they are only eight litres/2.1 gallons. Here in OZ, a good undented tank is really hard to come by. I stripped mine to repaint, and the other news is that the bit of tank that is not clear coated is a long way from polished alloy. Expect to put some elbow grease and time into that baby. There is one on OZ Ebay at the moment with only minor dents. From personal experience these dents cannot be pulled using the "Dent Doctor" technique. (Special glue on gizmoes that the crash shops use, that enables the dent to pulled without getting at it from the inside. They glue on this little fitting, use a special tool to pull the dent out, then a special solvent to get the glue on fitting off. Alloy is too stiff.) Deus tanks look good to me. Mick

PS, I reckon the very early painted XT/TT tanks are actually steel. Don't get caught out on that, eh? . Anyway, if you got a good one of those, it'd be sacrilege top use it on anything but a concours resto of an XT/TT. Mick

Okay I've held off long enough! The SR tank is aprox 50mm longer than than & XT/TT tank. The rear mount on the SR is set further back than the XT/TT. Then to throw another spanner in the works. The tanks change on the XT/TT in 79 when they went to leading axle forks. The early tanks in Oz are steel we didn't get the alloy till late 79 with the arrival of the TT. The good old USA got alloy from day 1 ( except for first release 75 plated bikes) the mother land & europe neither got alloy tanks. As for fitting & alloy XT/TT tank to & SR good luck the lower mounts might line up but you will have to cut and move the rear mount forward. Then you will have to get a different seat. AS the SR seat will be now short. Then to make it even worse the TT tank has no reserve tap. Curly( bearer of bad tidings BAH HUMBUG)

Beautiful, Curly. I never even thought about the length. I think the message is clear - buy an aftermarket tank. It'll actually look better on a cafe racer, it'll fit, and given the prices they are asking for straight alloy XT/TT tanks on Ebay, they won't cost all that much more. I personally lust after the seat/tank combo that deus put on their "streettracker" SR400. Depends what you can afford and can get hold of I suppose. Mick

These would probably look better on a SR than on a Harley. I'll see if I can track down info on them. Postage on an aluminum tank can't be too much — at least compared to the cost of the tank. www.jockeyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27046I'm guessing they're made by the Brits.

Some of the best alloy tanks in the world are made in victoria by bernie willet [ who made kenny roberts alloy stuff] and again, just to rub it in, a third of the price AND, whatever style. Carl, caferacer NSW.
