you can build a simple bridge rectifier and use a zener with a current limiting resistor as you suggest.
BUT
When you price up how much the components cost you won't be far off the price of a second hand premade unit that will be a d**n site more reliable on a viby old single. You will need a large heat sink and a zener designed to handle 15 amps, plus a robust way to mount the diodes.
Also the zener controlled system is extremely crude and apt to allow excessive currents to flow as the diode by nature is controlling only the voltage(hence you need a resitor with high load capacity to attempt to limit the current flowing through the zener).
A honda 250 has the same type of geny as the SR and I bet used 250 honda parts are a d**n site cheaper then SR parts.
