I have been using a 4700uF 50v capacitor for some time without problems. It works well. I ordered it from RS Components on-line. It was less than 2$ excluding postage.
I use a (trickle) battery charger for maintenance.

Thats exactly what came on my '80 SR street tracker, maskman. It's mounted up under the seat, though, and is hard to spot.
