I took my sr out last nite after I topped the tank off to the bottom of the filler spout.I put 40.3 km on a mixed ride of back road riding 80-100 km/hr stuff.Afterward I topped the tank off to the same level, using a measure I used just over 1900 cc of fuel. That works out to a little better than 20km/litre. My plug colour is quite light(not white) but it responds fine.I have been unable to get much in the way of plug colour these last few years with the current use of these unleaded low surphur fuels. With 4t engines I am a believer that if it feels right and sounds right it pretty well is right. Later.. Cheers

Yeah, thats a fair shout.Only you know your general riding style.I've found similar with the plug colur,I seem to get a light grey at the tip and central electrode and blackish around the bottom of the threaded portion, definitely never seen the light brown!like you say modern fuels dont give the old range of colours.Got a local dyno facility that i'm gonna contact first cos if they dont stock a reasonable range of carb jets&needles i reckon the results are limited. Finally, you can sometimes be chasing something that aint there, these bikes are rated at 30ish bhp,its never gonna be sportsbike performance.Cheers. Andy Hi Andy Please post your findings on the Dyno guys work ,I'm looking for someone to set up my Mikki TM36-68 pumper carb & your just down the road from COV. The bike does start eventually but seems very rich, blipping the throttle produces a puff of black smoke out the exhaust .I haven't ridden the bike as yet ,still messing around with the tank graffix so don't know anything about the characteristics of the motor under load . PS We must meet up sometime mate -Sixhills ?? LURCH

Spindle, no special reason on the P2(188) was just a spare we used. The mpg your getting indicates its running way to rich in the midrange. Your riding style won't have that much of an affect on mpg. I flog the shit out of mine(don't I Rick, Milko, RD & Stew)and the best I could get was 15km/l now its tuned the worst I get is 19km/l. As for dyno guys find one that has parts and also knows and likes old bangers. I can't sing Carl's praises enough, his knowledge of little tricks is invaluable.IE: shim under circlip just to get needle in just the right spot. Your average joe dyno guy would have said close enough and left it not quite right. Ask around find the guy the classic racers use.
Need to get this off my chest! You can't tune with a plug chop!
For those that looked at my carb specs I made a mistake with the circlip postion. It is now correct.
Curly I can breath easy now another load off my chest. Yes I've open'd another can of worms with my comments

Hi Lurch, good to see your up and running again, yeah i'm always up for a ride, reasonable weather permitting,i'm sure we can find a neutral meet up point, got a mate who's got a sr500 too so we can have a good natter. Now then this dyno guy is convenient, RJS Superbike, unit 3 mallory park circuit which as close to you as it is me,i'm gonna pay him a visit first for a chat,if he's just racebike oriented he may not be what we're after.Curly's right i dont want some ultra speed freak melting my bike! plus i wanna know if he carries a range of suitable bits for the carbs we're discussing, more on that one later.Curly,I remember sometime ago you mentioning about plug chops, i agree ,you can't get all the colours of the rainbow due to unleaded juice, fair comment. When i eventually get this bike running at optimum i'm more than happy to let the world know the final ingredients, the shared info on this site helps to keep these old girls going, invaluable!More later. Regards, Andy

Cool. Let us know how you do. Here's my take from my stuff and the other guys who have posted their specs.
If you have: aftermarket intake (e.g. K&N, Uni, or other free-flowing device) AND a freer flowing aftermarket exhaust (e.g. supertrapp), then a 240 main, 25 pilot, P8 needle jet, and the 6DH4 needle that comes with the carb is a good start.
If you have: aftermarket intake (e.g. K&N, Uni, or other free-flowing device) AND stock exahust then a 240 main, 25 pilot, P7 needle jet, and the 6DH4 needle that comes with the carb is a good start
I suggest buying main jets 220-260; pilot jets 25, 27.5, 30; and the P7 and/or P8 needle jet.

I don't know if this will be any help but the HS40 that I just put on had a #150 main (actual size=1.50mm) and 17.5 pilot jet but was slightly too rich at full throttle so I just went down to a #140.

Mine actually came with different jets and needles than what you listed. 240 main, 40 pilot, Q6 needle jet, and 6FJ6 needle. I had planned on ordering different ones anyways, so it's not to big of a deal.

been reading this thread with intrest as ive just brought an xt and i think this is the carb its fitted with (has a sudco raceing sticker on it) im fitting a pod filter currently has the stock cleaner, and i will be makeing it a titanium exhaust with an absorbtion 'silencer' so will be in the same boat as you guys.
Any way, was wondering if any one has tried useing an oxygen meter? you can buy them real cheap and get a lambda sensor out of a car at the scrap yard. i heard about this from the Dbbp.com chopper site were they were useing this set up to dial in a twin choke webber on a harley.

>was wondering if any one has tried useing an oxygen meter? Yes, I have them installed on my 750 Seca and XS1100. Problem is they need to be heated in order to work and the heating element draws a lot of current. I was able to find a model for Toyota trucks that didn't use excessive current but it's rather expensive. Haven't put one on the SR since there is only one carb and it's easy to adjust so I strapped on an exhaust gas analyzer and took it out on the highway to check it them removed it when I was done.
