I am going to get a new front and rear tire for my '81 SR500 wich I recently bought. Does anyone have any ideas on which tire brand and type will work well on this bike? It currently has a stock front tire and a street-n-trail type rear tire with tubes in place.

100/90-19 and 110/90-18.
I thought I'd try a pair of the Maxxis Promaxx tires. Has anyone out there tried these before?

I have a Dunlop D404 (100/90-19) on the front, $50 from ebay. Don't remember what the rear tire is.

I have metzler 77's and 99's on mine good lugs, I have used them in the snow this spring and they clean out fairly well, they are also sold in inch sizes. I may look at the GS bmw style tires for my next set I ride on a fair amount of gravel roads and was very happy with that style on my r100gs

So is anyone riding on "Avon" tires? I was looking at their roadrider am26. Some of you guys like the bridgestone BT45's, can you tell my why? I'm just trying to find a tire that will last and be safe in the wet......and not look like a truck tire. Thanks ;D

I have found the BT45s to be great in the dry and also very good in the wet...I have tried others such as Dunlops and Michelins and found them to be sadly lacking...especially in the wet! The BTs grip great at fast cornering and in the wet they're confidence inspiring. They do wear though, but that just proves to me they're working. I waited ages for the Michelin Macadam to wear and in the end I gave up and took it off anyway. I was not sorry...went straight back to the Bridgestones. SR

BT45s calmed my hairy handling XS650 down no end.
I had Avon Road Runners that squirm and slide but never actually let go on my last (and current) SR. Next set of tyres will be BT45s.

My old Avon Roadrunner died today and I'm in the market for new tires. Looks like BT45 Bridgestones are a popular favorite. What I'm wondering is how much rubber can I stuff in a stock 81 SR500. The Avon was a 4.25/85h18 rear, and the front is still the stock tire. There seems to be quite a bit of room around the rear tire except the torque strut for the drum brake is kind of close, but I'm sure I can modify that if needed. The front seems a bit tight around the fender, But I'm not seeing many options for 19" tires out there.
The ones I'm considering are Battlax BT-45V Sport Touring 100/90V-19 front 120/90V-18 rear The v rating seems a bit exsessive but it's the only way they stock the 19" front.
Any thoughts or personal preferences would be appreciated.
